hi someone who is more medically aware than me will reply I should think. I just wanted to say that my OH had the same last year. He has not had another bleed but a follow up endoscopy showed more banding needed, so varicies were still there. A later endoscopy showed no need for banding. No drinking alcohol is essential and that can be a big struggle. Good luck you are in the right place, people are very helpful here.

Hi Dinah ,

I appreciate your time and words , thank you for your support but I’m sorry but what does OH mean , also my mum isn’t a drinker and has stopped the occasional drink as it’s fatty liver disease , non alcohol related , such a terrible illness that’s for sure in both diseases … hope things are going well now for u , thanks again truly appreciated .

I haven't heard of a tear in the oesophagus unless it's happened during an endoscopy procedure. Blood vessels may be thinner in an older person and cirrhosis often leads to poor blood clotting, low platelets.

Obviously having portal hypertension and varices there is a possibly risk of bleeding from those so it is always important to keep an eye out for any suspected internal bleeding such as signs of blood in bowel motions - either fresh red blood or black, tarry, sticky poo that indicates older GI blood. Obviously any blood issuing from the mouth too by way of vomiting blood.

Any signs of blood loss is an emergency.

Hi Katie ,

Mum got taken in by ambulance after bad pains in stomach , then passing blood by vomiting a lot , dr says it can happen when vomiting and she got two pins put in during the endoscopy but still bad pains in her stomach again , phoned nh24 and said she maybe just needs to do a poo …all a very stressful time … but thank you for always being there you are all a great support .

Thank you

Sharon .

I had a couple of banding done to me , so they did a TIPS on me which reduced the blood pressure that caused internal bleeding. So far all is well no bleeding and banding

My wife had varicies and the subsequent banding for 3-5 years before transplant. She also had regular blood transfusions more or less weekly. Directly she had a transplant it all stopped which at the time was like a miracle. She had one very healthy liver after but unfortunately caught Covid and passed away nearly two years ago. Hope this is helpful.

Hi Sharon, My wife is also 76 with the same acute symptoms. She was assessed by request for transplant, but before assessment advised that this is very unusual for anyone over the age of 70. To be considered for a transplant the person must be fit enough for what is a very invasive operation. Due to the loss of weigh and muscle strength my wife has now been advised that she is not fit enough, leaving us with trying to manage the symptoms best we can. Just to say that the transplant doctors were very considerate and kind during this process.

Hi Ron,

So sorry to hear your wife has been advised against transplant ,they haven’t even spoke about transplant , mum also is the same with weight and muscle loss , now on the protein build up drinks ,and sad for you both as it’s very difficult to help or manage , mum also had trouble sleeping and bad pains in stoMach constantly … does your wife get this ? Thinking of you both
