ggt 700

Hi, got a ggt reading of 700, I’m so worried about this, I have been a drinker in the past but as my levels have been rising I have been giving it up. A couple of wines on Xmas eve & new year but no more since & before that I had nothing for 5 weeks. Does this mean I have cirrhosis? Anyone in the same boat as me please.

GGT is an inflammation marker and can be raised in many liver conditions.

It doesn't necessarily point to cirrhosis but does indicate a degree of liver inflammation.

Continued liver inflammation can lead to fibrosis and potentially cirrhosis.

It is important to find out what is causing the inflammation and stop the assault in the liver. Booze is obviously one candidate but there could be more going on. Hopefully there is some further medical follow up planned.

Thank you for the reply, I have more blood tests in 2 weeks and am waiting for an ultra sound appointment so hopefully that will tell me more, it’s just very worrying at the moment. My alkaline level is quite high too at 332 & a couple of other results slightly above the range. .just hope that things improve soon.

my husbands GGT IS 1400 and ALP 401 he was only a moderate drinker but hasn’t had a drop for over a year. Luckily we see the liver consultant today so if he can throw a light on it I will let you know .

in reply toMoux1

Morning, thank you for your reply. It’s very worrying at times like this for everyone isn’t it? I hope you get good news later & any help would be appreciated thank you. Good luck for later.

in reply toMoux1

Hi Moux1, how did your husband get on with the consultant? How are you too?

thank you Redded, the specialist is scratching his head. My husband has now gained weight and is doing well and back to work ( he is part time) but these two enzymes are really high. He thinks it could be a blocked bile duct as in gall stones but he doesn’t have any pain or yellowing. He has brought forward his ultrasound and he is to have the camera down to grab any stones that could be in situ , also sending him for tests to rule out liver cancer . I am ok thank you , I’m just a born worrier and concerned wife . The specialist thought I was a doctor lol , I’ve just done a lot of research on the subject of the liver. I hope you are well , take care

in reply toMoux1

Well that’s good news hopefully, I have my fingers crossed for you both & yes it’s a big worry at times like this but hopefully things will be good. Take care

in reply toMoux1

Hi moux1, hope you and your husband are well. Did you get anymore answers as regards your husbands tests?

thank you so much , he is doing so well , so we were disappointed with the negative response from the consultant . I don’t often see my GP ( we don’t have the same one) and I was telling him about how well hubby was doing . He then said to me , “ I now look at the patient and not the results “ that has stuck with me , you take care

in reply toAyrshireK

Hi AyrshireK, just an update, my Ggt has dropped from 699 to 479 & my alp has dropped from 332 to 279. I’ve had an ultrasound & the doctor has said it’s clear. Not been called back so hopefully things are looking better.

Hope all is well with you & hubby

my GGT was 650 when I was in hospital with decompensated liver dis-ease.(liver was very inflamed from continuous binge drinking).

in reply todeanw41

Hi, thanks for the reply…how are you now? Getting better i hope

Yes thank you. Not drank for 2 1/2 years my last Fibroscan was 8.8kpa,normal bloods. My original diagnosis was cirrhosis because I had ascites, but my Fibroscan indicates F2 fibrosis. My consultant said it was possibly the inflammation that cause the ascites. Have you had a scan?

in reply todeanw41

Hi, i had a ultra sound around 7 years ago & am due another anytime soon. Waiting for an appointment.

deanw41 in reply toshmila19

Very well thank you,I just had my first Fibroscan which came out at 8.8kpa indicating f2 fibrosis. I have 6 monthly bloods and scans although GGT isn’t something they test now. Blood are normal apart from platelets are a bit low 125k/135k.

in reply todeanw41

Glad to hear you are doing ok…are platelets a worry? my recent ggt was 699 & now 479 & my alp is down from 332 to 279. My ultra sound came back clear too,

deanw41 profile image
deanw41 in reply to

Do they know what’s causing the elevated bloods? Well low platelets is a sign of cirrhosis but the Fibroscan/scans/bloods argue against that so…..🤷‍♂️. I’m on Carvedilol(beta blocker) and a side effect of that can cause low platelets. Had my bloods done yesterday so we shall we.

in reply todeanw41

The drs have told me nothing except that scan is clear & bloods satisfactory (thats only cos its on my notes online). No medication etc either. I am on meds for osteoporosis & asthma tho & thats it.

Hi Redded - concurring with the replies you’ve got already. My GGT got to over 1500 a couple of years ago. I have compensated cirrhosis and comparing with deanw41’s reading of 650 with de compensated cirrhosis shows this is not a linear relationship and only one marker rather than determinative on its own. Other investigations are required so hopefully you and doc are onto it. From much lower alcohol intake and personally hoping for complete abstinence from myself this year, I am currently around the 500 level. It does take a while to shift this marker, but keep on the investigations and understanding the cause will help guide future course. This is my first post here, but been monitoring daily for a couple of years now and found lots of support and inspiration from people here, so keep close and wishing you well.

in reply toX100

Thanks for the reply, my ggt is 700 & alkaline 332…slight increase on some other results but nothing much. The 2 i specified are worrying me the most i cant sleep for worrying. Just hope things will be ok

My GGT was around 880 during its peak. I have compensated liver cirrhosis.

I haven’t drank since March 2020. My last bloodwork was in dec 2022, and the value was 70.

So it does come down. We need to remove the cause of the elevation - which in my case was excessive drinking

in reply toKurtrules2018

Thank you for your reply, it’s good to hear your results have fallen…I also have alkaline levels of 332, did you have other high results? I too used to drink to excess but cut it back a lot recently & only had a couple over Xmas. I’m now not drinking & will be abstaining from now on

hi,

My ALP has always been within the normal ranges thankfully, and so has the Albumin.

Apart from those two others like - ALT, AST, Bilirubin etc have been abnormal.

Total Bilirubin is still not normal; My eyes have a tinge of yellow even after this time away. Doc tell me that is my new normal owing to cirrhosis.

Not what you're looking for?
