I’m after some advice from anyone who has had liver ascities drainage. I had 6 litres removed on Wednesday after being admitted to hospital on Monday with severe swelling and pain, after numerous scans it showed a large amount of fluid around the liver ( I am a heavy drinker) it’s now 3 days since the procedure and I’m still in pain and my tummy is still swollen. I’m taking diuretic tablets but still not passing a great deal of urine. If anyone has had the procedure, is this normal? I’m terrified of going back into hospital. Have a great day everyone xxxx

Hello starlightYes,I've had several ascitic drains-a paracentesis done. If your in pain, you should make contact with your liver consultant, liver nurse, or gp...ASAP really. As there could be some infection. Unfortunately if you're still drinking, that will be making matters so much worse....Don't get me wrong, I know all to well how dam difficult it is to slowly stop....I'm assuming this has been discussed with yourself?. Also a no salt diet is required. I only had some discomfort at the site where the drain was actually put into the side of my stomach....no pain apart from the local anaesthetic before they pushed the drain in. Then the relief was tremendous, the collection bag filled up that quickly. I couldn't believe it, if I remember rightly, they drained over 10 litres at my first drain. I could then breathe so much easier, and also alot more mobile.
You could always contact the British liver Trust nurses.....they are so friendly and supportive....and maybe go through things you wish to discuss.
I hope things improve for yourself, as I've been there,so fully understand.
Well the first thing to go is alcohol because that will just keep adding to your problem, then find out how much water they are telling you to drink a day and stick to it. Good luck not nice that drainage I know been through it 👍.
thank you, I’ve not drank for 11 days and have no intention to drink again, I’ve cut down on salt, just worried about still getting stomach pains. Thanks for replying xx
We’ll done for giving up the drink. That must be really tough but keep it up.
My Mum had ascites drained three times. Each time she just felt a lot more comfortable. She never mentioned any pain so if you’re in pain, I think Redpoint is rightand it’s worth talking to a doctor. Did the hospital give you a number to contact or say to go to your GP? BLT helpline are brilliant, ring them if you’re not sure.
thank you, I’ve just rang BLT they were great, she said the discomfort is normal so at least my mind is a bit more at ease as my Dr’s aren’t being very helpful. Thank you for replying xxx
You’re welcome. I hope the pain eases soon and the diuretics kick in. Low salt isnt as easy as it sounds, there’s salt in everything! As you’ll see on here there are lots of people on here who’ve been where you are now but have turned things around.
Hi, sorry to hear about your predicament. But 6 liters even know is seems a lot of fluid to be removed its not that much. going by my own experience, I was having between 12-10 liters about every fortnight and each time losing about a stone in weight everytime.Hope this puts your mind to rest.
