I have had cirrhosis for five years. Recently I was prescribed Acamprosate to prevent the urge to drink (I fell off the wagon three months ago). I have been taking Acamprosate for the last three months and find them very effective. The instructions state that I can take this medication for up to 12 months. My question is for anyone on the British Liver Trust with experience of Acamprosate - is it safe for long-term use? I'd be most grateful to learn of other people's experiences.

Dear Beauport,
Whilst other forum members may be abe to post about their own experiences, this is a question that your own health care professional is best placed to answer.
We suggest talking this through with your own doctor or health care professional in the first instance.
Best wishes

Along with taking this medication are you engaging with any alcohol support to help deal with the reason behind why you are urged to drink? Tackling the underlying cause and in effect re-programming your brain and imoroving your own will power. No tablet is going to rid you of an addiction but should be providing that support whilst you tackle the physical and mental reasons why you drink.
I'm lucky enough to be getting lots of support from local services, which are brilliant in my area. Having been alcohol free for over four years before relapsing after a bereavement, I now realise that I need long term support and will continue to access various groups and services going forward.
