Hi , So I have been a heavy drinker for years , drink everyday , I have been to the doctor and they did a liver scan , everything came back ok , my bloods were fine , no ascites , but my stomach is still really big ! I am 5ft 1 not overweight, I eat a good diet , but look 9 months pregnant , Dr put me on omeprazole but it's not helping . Just wondering what to do as I can't go on like this , I'm getting very depressed now. I have a Dr calling today. Thanks for reading .

You have got to give up drinking . Not only is it having an effect on your physical health but your mental health too. Alcohol it'self is a depressant as well as a poison so it is doing you no favours at all. You will be going round in circles til it spirals out of contol if you continue to drink.

You are in the very fortunate position of having normal scans and bloods despite consuming high levels of alcohol for a long period of time. The liver is an amazing organ and can take a fair amount of punishment, but it can’t take it indefinitely. Stop your alcohol intake now and you will continue in good health, carry on and it’s only a matter of time before those normal results become abnormal. It’s highly unlikely that a scan and bloods would miss ascites. So the stomach you describe is most likely due to the way your body is putting down fat. Alcoholic drinks are high in ‘dead’ calories. They have no nutritional benefit but your body will process them and convert them to fat. Beer belly is the result. Stop the alcohol consumption and eat a good diet and I suspect it will go of it’s own accord.

There’s lots of reasons your stomach could be bloated, bare with the doctors as it’s a case of ruling out possible causes. Your lucky you’re liver is still coping but as you know if you don’t stop drinking it will stop coping and I wouldn’t wish decompensated liver failure on anyone. Please get help to stop it’s extremely difficult to do on your own. Good luck

You say you don't have ascites, but that is what that swollen stomach might be.

Stop drinking now.

And another thing it might be if it really is not your liver is a heart problem, ascites is not just caused by liver disease.

I am NOT a doctor this is not medical advice. Good luck and prayers sent to you.

Well done. All the best. Make sure you are completely honest with the doctor about the amount you drink. Laura
