Swollen Ankles

Hi Friends, Do any of you experience random ankle swelling. My left is worse than my right and Spiro isn't even touching it. I haven't changed my diet and have a fairly routine life (no flying or exotic travel or long car journeys.) It has been going on now for about a week and I sure hope it is not a sign of further decline. I hate cirrhosis.

Cheers, Liz

Hi Liz,

Oh yes I did suffer from swollen ankles before transplant. At one point they would get so swollen that they would bruise. It’s the dreadful

Cirrhosis. I was advised to sleep with feet elevated with a pillow under my feet and when I could I would also keep feet elevated when sitting at home (like put my feet on a chair or sofa). It would also help if I put lotion on lower legs including ankles always moving up towards the heart then elevate. Be well.... 💜🦋

Good morning canadaliz,

I am sure our lovely forum members will share their experiences , but as with any new symptom , please seek medical advice.

Best wishes ,

Hi Liz My ankles were doing this long before transplant. If I sat with my legs up they would go down quite a bit. Often in the morning they were more like normal. Being up on my feet and walking about would make them swell (and my feet too) quite quickly.

At one point I was on Spiro + another diuretic Furosemide at the same time. Then there were times when I could cut right back on the diuretics but these were generally times when I wasn't too physically active. It's quite a common symptom of cirrhosis I'm afraid.

Best wishes.

Alf.

Hi, I’m on aldactone and furosemide and if I’m on my feet all day they still swell, only a little but enough for shoes to be too tight. An hour of feet up and it’s gone.

I’m not sure if it’s a sign of worse or not but if you read so many posts on here some people have issues with other things worse than others. So I think although all the symptoms are nearly the same each person gets them at a different level for no apparent reason (obviously we don’t know people’s results etc.)

Do check with your doctor though as it’s only just started happening, any changes, check. 🌻

I had the same problem until I was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure, since I have been taking medication for the latter, I have had no problems

Hi Liz.

I hope that your ankles' swelling is short lived and that the medical community can find its cause and offer a solution to you quickly.

From my own experience: My husband's Gastroenterologist has conveyed to us that the newish and severe swelling in His legs and knees (like the now persistent edema in his feet and ankles) is just a part of my husband's cirrhotic condition.

Seems to be a disease that just keeps giving.

Recently, I asked a Senior Resident Doctor if Epson salts are okay to use. He did not know.

I did have my husband soak his feet and ankles in a lukewarm bowl of them at one point some time ago. For Him, there were no visible ill effects and he seemed to feel a bit of relief.

From what I am seeing firsthand, this condition is terribly uncomfortable.

Sorry that you are also enduring this, Liz.

For my husband, elevating his legs helps somewhat, at least.

I know some that retain water in their feet/ankles that do Not share similar liver related health issues.

Healing wishes to you and to finding a quick and effective remedy.

If you do, would love to hear what that may be!
