Enlarged liver

Hi I have been told I have a mildly enlarged liver and fatty liver. The ultrasound was private and wasn't the best at relaying information.

I knew I had a fatty liver but the enlarged bit has got me really worried. I don't know what it means.

I've googled it but had to stop because it was taking me down alsorts of scary roads.

Paul.

It is my understanding that fatty liver can be cured with an improved diet.

Google "Fatty Liver Diet Books" and buy one and eat those foods only for a while and you should be find. And don't drink either for a year or two.

This is just one example.

I am not a doctor, this is casual internet message board advice and nothing more.

HiThere’s a lot of info on the British Liver Trust website about fatty liver and they recommend a Mediterranean diet.

There’s a useful one page reminder of a liver friendly diet on this site

fattyliverfoundation.org

I too have fatty liver ( shown on US and Fibroscan) and was advised by a specialist to treat it by losing weight and exercise. Since adopting this diet and giving up alcohol, I’ve lost a few pounds so hoping to see a reduction in the fat in my liver when I’m next checked.

Hi Rawdy, my understanding is that having an enlarged liver is all part of fatty liver disease so I don’t think they are telling your anything worse than you already knew. As Ken says, fatty liver can be turned around with a healthy diet. As my liver consultant tells me ‘less carbs’.

Avoid google at all costs it can lead to tragedy. I have a fatty liver and it has echogenecity which means I believe that is reflects the US. When you meet to discuss results ask if the surface of the liver is smooth (mine was) and ask the size of the portal vein mine was 25mm which is spot on I believe. A CT scan would be useful so suggest it, this can indicate evidence of portal hypertension and if you have no evidence of hypertension this should give you some confidence. Not sure why you had to go private have a word with your GP about getting some support and extra tests. Lots of people have fatty livers and live to a ripe old age.

really now you have got me worried lol perhaps I misheard the US guy said it was normal and the report said so to anyway the CT scan and CT scan with contrast showed it was pumping blood fine with no dye appearing in veins around it which would indicate hypertension. Very reassuring scan the CT and CT with contrast try and get one. All the best
