Can Fatty Liver Cause an Enlarged Liver

Hi all,

Just as the question says can a fatty liver cause your liver to swell/become enlarged or inflammed? After a visit to my gp she said my liver felt enlarged on percussion. I am not asking for medical advice just opinions on wether an alcoholic fatty liver can cause the liver to swell/enlarge? Thanks for any information.

Yes it can. So can any form of inflamattion (hepatitis).

Btw though, everytime I see my GP and he does the percussion tap he tells me my liver is enlarged and everytime we do an ultrasound he is proven wrong. It's a bit archaic of a method when we have imaging tests available

Yes, I was diagnosed with nafld and then Nash, my liver and spleen were very enlarged. Take care Lynne

Curiously Lynne do you know what size your spleen got up to at its biggest? Doctors are still trying to sort out my massive spleen and I always wonder if anyone has gotten to the 24 cm I'm at without a secondary ailment involved.

I think mine was 15 cm but that was 2.5 years ago, goodness knows what it is now!! My liver was 22.5 cm but again that was 2.5 years ago. I feel much worse now than I did then, to be honest this last 3 weeks have been awful. Seeing my consultant on Thurs 14th thank goodness. Take care Lynne

Thanks for the kind answers all, my question would be how accurate palpation and percussion are to tell if the liver is swollen/enlarged as compared to imaging studies as I have read conflicting reports on this as PhoenixPalazzo said earlier and surely an image would be the only way to accurately measure liver length? Again I am only asking for opinions. Thanks.

My liver is still enlarged and poking up too high. Not where it’s supposed to live. It’s been like that for over two years now. I have cirrhosis though, not fatty liver.
