Does anyone have any experience of taking antibiotics while on Mycophenolate or any immune suppressant?
I have been prescribed an antibiotic by a locum doctor who then asked me will I stop the Mycophenolate while taking the antibiotics? She didn't know either way but told me to keeping taking both.
I tried ringing my Consultant's secretary to check with him but that secretary and another Liver Consultant's secretary are both on annual leave until Jan 2020 and the mailbox if full. To which I tried ringing the Liver ward and have left 2 messages with staff, but still no response.
I have started the antibiotics, but 4 days in, I'm feeling no better. So just wondering if taking both meds together are working against each other or will I just have to accept the fact I take longer to heal now I'm immune suppressed?

My sin is on azathioprine for Crohn's disease and has took antibiotics with it. I hope this helps. Hope you feel better soon . Love and hugs Lynne xxxx
I'm on immunosuppressants and I've taken antibiotics at the same time. Yes, healing takes longer when you are immune suppressed. Hope you're better soon.
I take myfortic and advagraf . I have very regular UTIs and am on a weekly dose of antibiotics. There was discussion about this from my liver guy and the pharmacy but it’s now the treatment I take. My prescription is now in the hands of a urologist.
Im on azathioprine and i am on antibiotics regularly . I know there are ones that dont work as well , maybe an idea to check back at doctors next week if not clearing.
Hi, although I’m not yet on an immunosuppressant I thought I’d respond. I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. I’m on a decreasing dose of prednisolone, aiming for an immunosuppressant as soon as possible. I had a sore on my leg from banging it. When it didn’t heal with TCP and germaline I went to the chemist who gave me an antibiotic cream. This did nothing, and though I felt it really didn’t warrant the attention, I figured I’d better see the doctor. She said it was cellulitis and gave me a course of antibiotics for a week. Since then I’ve finished four weeks of antibiotics and, though better than it was, it’s still not healed. I will need to see the doctor again tomorrow to see what next. So for me, healing has certainly slowed with prednisolone. You don’t say why you need the antibiotics but if the course doesn’t help, I suggest you see your doctor again. I’ve been told I may need intravenous antibiotics. All the best to you.
Thank you for sharing your experience and hope you get sorted this time. I'm on both prednisolone and immune suppressant at the minute so think I just have to accept we do take longer to heal while on these meds. I will revisit the doctor if there is no change on completion of this course of antibiotics.
With all the discharge stuff we were given was a few copies of a letter I could give to my gp and dentist etc plus a spare one I could keep for myself if I needed to use it elsewhere, i.e. if I went to A&E.
Included in the letter was the details of what shouldn't be given in the way of anti-biotics amongst other things. In my experience, as long as the antibiotic is not on that list i've been fine taking it without amending my other meds.
I had an infection in my tooth a couple of months ago and my dentist checked that what he was going to use wasn't on that list or wouldn't interact with my other meds. My GP tends to do the same.
Given that everything else seems to take longer to resolve with me, e.g. headaches etc, I wouldn't be surprised if it took longer for an infection to dissipate too. Certainly seemed to be the case with my tooth anyway.
Thanks Kristian for your reply. It's really good that you were given a letter to explain that all, least then you can check things for yourself. Unfortunately I never got that letter, maybe it's only given to those who have been transplanted. Hope all sorted now with regards to your tooth.
Tooth is fine now. Root canal treatment was done, but the infection still took quite a while to settle.
I accepted that with a suppressed immune system I would be more susceptible to getting infections and that they'd probably be harder to tackle when I got them. So far I've been pretty lucky and managed to avoid anything too problematic. Hope I've not just tempted fate, lol. 🤞
With tacrolimus it is absolutely imperative that we don't take macralide antibiotics. The most common one is erythromycin. I carry this information around with me incase of emergency.
I was nearly given erythromycin when I had a chest infection. Apparently they interact and make tacrolimus ineffective
