A genetically modified pig heart was transplanted into a human who survived the operation. I know long term prospects are stated as unknown in the article amd it's mostly an academic exercise at this point but found this to be very interesting either way. It mentions research into xenotransplantation of other organs such as kidneys and livers as well. This is after the recent test of a pig kidney on a woman on life support too. Who knows what possibilities there may be in 10+ years with genetically modified organs.

It truly is ground breaking, but there is always someone to knock it,I will and always believe the patients choice should Voice over any courts,or judge if they are mentally aware of the decision,at the end of the day it's preservation of life,I am in no doubt by the end of the day, week, month,it will regarded as in human, well done to all the hard work and research to create such fantastic developments, all we have is hope.and it's given that man with no other option but to fight for his survival.good on him for taking the leap of faith.
Thank you for sharing this, I saw it too, truly amazing!👏
that is a great find... medicine is making giant leaps forward at the moment and with it comes new hope which is always wonderful.
on a less serious note, I did say to my wife last night, "it is possible that one day I'll have a pigs liver" she replied "well at least it will match your face" lol
There has been ongoing work regarding pigs livers and kidneys for transplant. Way back in 1999 a guy awaiting liver transplant had his blood perfused through a pig one as a stop gap as he awaited a donor organ plus they've operated on a brain deceased kidney patient to see if a pig kidney would work in a human. (In the USA they say there are 100,000 folk awaiting transplant, 90,000 for a kidney).
Massive advances but also a mine field of all the ethics stuff to work through.
