I am on the liver transplant waiting list (6m and counting.) Last year I was put on spirinolactone to deal with ascites, which it has done very efficiently, however, I have just had a call from the specialist's secretary asking me to stop taking it... I will keep an eye on my weight and any swelling, and will ask about it at my next appointment, but in the meantime, any theories why I have been asked to stop taking it? Thanks and Christmas wishes to all

Spirinolactone question
Possibly something has shown up in your most recent bloods with regards to side effects of spiro. It can affect kidney function and that might be the most likely reason they've advised a cessation at present.

What Katie said 😊My partner had to stop taking it for that reason...
Wishing you the best, K 😊
I don't know why you have been told to stop taking them, there are many reasons and some are actually good (the drugs are working too well for example, let's see if your body can eliminate waste without the drugs, etc.) but you should be comforted that your doctors are keeping a close eye on you. I would consider this good news.
agree with all that the close monitoring is good news you have been waiting for six months it wont be long now. Good luck
Hi taar. I had to stop twice both down to the kidneys. Quickly the bloods cames back to normal with Haas(Albumin).
Wouldn't worry but do keep an eye on acsites fluid building up quicker.

Hi 👋
I was told it holds onto potassium and lowers sodium levels, by my Consultant. All the above are knowledgeable and really good pointers.
Can you try calling your Consultant or send an email to TP team next week before it goes bonkers, just to confirm for peace of mind?
Take care 🙂
Hi you're welcome 👋
I was originally taken off Spiro' when I was blue lighted to hospital for Hyponatremia, because of my super low sodium level. I think just under 100 mmol/L the range is (approx', as it varies a digit or two depending where you read about it, on my records it says 135- 145) so obviously I was out if it. I can vaguely remember being helped out of the house to the ambulance, then the first 2 days were just a haze.
I was told by some nurses to have salt on my food in hospital, then a Dr went mental at me for doing so, because of my ascites.
Then they stopped again as my potassium was high.
Just stick with what they've told you. January isn't far off.
Look after yourself,
Take good care 😊 xXx
Probably because it is affecting your kidneys. I was prescribed it and furosemide and ended up with an aki! They tried to reintroduce them a couple of times but my body said NO! I had to have regular paracentesis to help pre transplant 🙏
