I'm 48 and for first have had abnormal liver test results. Fasting liver profile completed and GGT level was 52. All other liver levels normal GP said. During telephone appointment GP advised to repeat liver test in 2-3 months. I barely drink alcohol, only medication I'm on is HRT and try to eat healthy. I'm concerned and surprised my GGT level is high. I have private health insurance. Should I wait to see what GGT level is in 2-3 months or do I use my private healthcare to see a Specialist?

Hi geordigem,
The usual practice in cases like this where there is a mild elevation is to repeat the tests in a few weeks to see if the results go back to normal. So your gp suggesting you come back in a couple of months for a re-test seems about right.
GGT is quite a sensitive thing so doesn't take much to get it upset, so mild elevations are not uncommon. If it were me I'd be happy to go back to your gp in a couple of months time and see how things have changed. In most cases things return to normal and, as your other test results are fine, it's unlikely that there is too much untoward going on.
Did you have to fast? They never tell me to fast. Mine has been around 70 all year and now told Satisfactory but I’m not having it and pushing it all the way If you have PMI use it.
Did your Doctor show any Concerns about your GGT Levels. It wouldn’t hurt to get a second opinion if your really worried but Yes they do re-peat the Tests
My GGT Level is 554 I’ve had a procedure done just recreated my bloods & waiting to hear from my gp next week to see if they have altered
It's a nightmare even trying to get a telephone conversation with GP. Phoned this morning when telephone line opened at GP's, was on hold for an hour and still can't get a telephone appointment with GP. Can't access my private healthcare without GP referral. GP receptionist won't facilitate telephone appointment unless an emergency. Frustrating
99.9% nothing to worry about. All a private Dr would do is exactly the same as your GP has advised.
Repeat test in 3 months.
Even if it's still "high" the advice would probably just be to keep an eye on it with 6 monthly tests.
Don't waste the self pay money or increased premiums next year.
52 is very slightly above average "normal" but probably just a blip.
