Liver disease & body odour

Bit of an unpleasant topic I’m afraid. Just curious but ever since I have had the return of my rhs pain which I associate with my past drinking I have also noticed I have really strong BO under my right arm pit. Strangely my left doesn’t seems the same with no bad smell. Never noticed it before so it seems to have coincided with my suspected liver pains over the last months. My wife has even commented on how bad my t shirts smell.

My understanding is liver disease can cause this type of thing but I thought it was usually at advanced stages or on the breath rather than BO.

Pleased to say most of my pain has cleared up with no drink and exercise but this bad BO persists. Any views or similar experiences, or perhaps its unrelated or just weird old me.

Many thx for any advice.

Hi Oxman, my husband has cirrhosis and even before he was diagnosed I noticed that his BO changed. Could also be the medication he is taking but there is definitely a connection. I'm not sure if his BO is getting less offensive or it's just me getting used to it 😆

Thx. Do you mind me asking if it was an all over thing. Just my right armpit but it’s very noticeable.

I think it was probably all over thing.

Just found this:

'If you are right-handed like most of the world, you will use that arm more and produce sweat that leads to molecules that release Organosulfur compounds called Thioalcohols which contain pungent odor. Therefore, your right armpit will smell more than your left.'

Yes thx. But this is new and started same time as my rhs ache/pain. Also found comments by one doctor saying bad BO affects only a small percentage of those with liver failure but they usually advanced and suffering other obvious symptoms as well. Not sure what to make of it. Will just have to hope it clears up. Thx again.

Funny, i noticed this too with my right arm! Just turned 50... Was thinking just one more New thing with age.... But now even more curious. Drink free for 7 months... Also changed diet... 🤷

I have definitely noticed a change in the smell of my BO - and my left hand side smells more, though I am righthanded!!

I am in stage 3 NAFLD - the fibrosis one.
