Quick question about prescriptions

Hi all,

Does anyone know if my partner should be exempt from prescription fees as he's on the LT waiting list?

Not easy to find on NHS sites.

Thanks, K 😊

Unfortunately I don't think he will be exempt. My partner was on lots of medication whilst waiting for transplant. You can pay for a medical card if you need more than a certain amount of medication per month. This saves money. My partner still paid after his transplant for quite some time. Due to the amount of medications he was taking he developed type 2 diabetes.....this then qualified him for free prescriptions. Hope this helps.

If he's in a situation of still working and earning then unless he was on any of the prescribed meds that qualify for free (cancer, diabetes, thyroid stuff) then he'd still need to pay and a pre-payment certificate will save you lots of money in the long run.

If on various benefits than prescription can become free or on low income there is help available.

This page may be of help to you. gov.uk/help-nhs-costs

(or move to a devolved part of the UK where everyone gets it free ......... LOL)

Katie

Thanks both.

He's already signed up for the prepayment certificate but I was just curious because of how ill he is. He can't work, Katie, and spends all day laying down in so much discomfort, but we have our own business so finances are complicated.

Anyway, just thought I'd check with you knowledgeable people. Thanks again.

Love and hugs, K 😊

Hi,

Can you possibly have a chat with the liver transplant coordinators? they may be able to advise.

Pre payment cert from NHS is £10.81 a month on a yearly direct debit, 10 months of payment for 12 months prescriptions

Some months I have 8 prescriptions so I more than get my moneys worth.

We're the same. Both my partner and I have prepaid certs and saves us a lot of money per year. I just wanted to check he still had to pay as every penny counts these days. Thanks for the reply 😊

I pay for all my prescriptions with the yearly pre paid cert as said above. Incredibly, the anti rejection drugs you have to take for the rest of your life after transplant are not free.

It's crazy that these prescriptions aren't free while others are. Not sure how they work out the criteria but I guess they have to make some money where they can.As the saying goes, keep taking the tablets!

Wishing you well, K 😊
