General question about fruit

Hi, I have liver fibrosis and was told to lose weight, 1+ year on and at target weight for 6 mths now...question is how much fruit is to much, I trend to rely on fruit instead of choc ect but wondering if I'm eating to much of it. Have looked on internet and it's all confusing as to how much is to much when you have liver issues. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks

Hi Yaz I'm not aware that fruit should be a problem in liver disease!..it possibly can cause loose bowel movements but other than that I think it is definitely healthier than chocolate!

I also am trying to get some weight off to try improve my cirrhosis and have been doing just the same as you as I love my sweet treats!😄In the recent heat I have been consuming lots of oranges..they tend to upset my stomach when I eat too much of them 😉

So far I haven't had any negative problems with my fruit binges but I suppose fruit can effect people in different ways!

I don't think there would be any medical issues caused by eating fruit as long as your overall diet is balanced.

Hi Hallie, thanks for your reply, oranges have the same affect on me so limit to 1aday, I have lots of berries, apple a day (keeps the Dr away😁) pear, peach, banana and plums and love apricots (when you can get them) this is a normal day, when I'm craving bad food I will eat more fruit, I've lost 8+ stone in weight and now at target so need to stay on the healthy eating for life. Good luck with your weight loss.

OMG Yaz well done what an achievement!

I'm hoping to get at least 2 stones off to feel just comfortable..so far about one in the last 3mths just by cutting out sweets chocolate and sugary treats..I'm doing the same by eating loads of fruit instead of giving in to my cravings for treats in the hope of getting to feel healthy again and to get rid of the fat in my liver that doesn't help if you have cirrhosis 😉

Hi Yaz. Do you yourself feel like you might be eating too fruit? If any of the following happen to you then you may be eating too much } Frequent bloating, diarrhea or IBS, you always crave sugar, have difficulty in losing weight...…. If you feel ok and don't suffer any of those problems and you are eating a healthy variety of foods as well as fruit then it should be ok. I was told when I had cirrhosis to aim for 3 portions a day. Not knowing what amount would be called 3 portions, I looked up what a few dieticians had to say on the matter and 2 cupfulls was quoted frequently for the RDA. Best wishes. Alf

Is that a rounded cup full or a flat cup full 😁. Sorry..... can’t help myself at times....

LOL. Don't suppose that difference is too important. Dieticians seem to have different opinions on this subject :-( I would think that if it's not causing any stomach or bowel or sugar problems that whatever suits each person is ok. Anyway we have mugs so there's another dilemma! :-( :-(

When you said mugs I thought.......😀

Well done on the weight loss, you have done brilliantly. I'm sure that if you've been eating large amounts of fruit for quite a while now with no ill effects then you should be ok to continue. All the best Alf

To me a portion of fruit is either 1 banana, 1 apple , 1 orange or a cereal bowl full of grapes strawberries or blueberries! I thought the recommended amount of fruit per day was 5 portions which I do not eat enough of 😣However with cirrhosis of the liver you may be required to eat more?

So today I'm raiding my fridge as it's half full with fruit and berries 😊😊😊😊

Bye and all have a pleasant day whatever your up too

Strictly speaking Trish - and you know I don’t do that 😀 - if one has diabetes 2 then you should only have 2 maybe 3 portions of fruit. So sayeth the latest NHS diabetes course! But that is for people with Diabetes 2 ! No ref was made to cirrhosis on the course and I didn’t ask. Like to keep my head down you know 😀👍

I was decompensated and during the HE phase, I couldn’t cope with the lactulose. I was also struggling to eat, as I had little appetite. I did however eat loads of fruits, a balance of them and not too much citrus. It was as effective as the lactulose and I explained everything to my doctors. They were more than happy for me to continue.

Best wishes with your health and success with the weight.

Mark.
