Caring for mam Post Liver Transplant

So nervous! My mam is in the operating theatre finally getting her #livertransplant

It's been a rough few years (including dealing with the alcoholism). I can't believe it's actually happening. Anyone been a carer for liver failure then transplant? Just wondering how long should I expect to continue care after transplant. Life has been on hold and I don't know what to do next!

So good to hear that your Mam has got her transplant. Dont worry too much about the aftercare at the moment. One step at a time. They won't let her out of hospital until they feel she is well enough to leave and she will be given lots of information from the transplant coordinators about how to look after herself, followup appointments etc. Perhaps you can be with her when she gets information about discharge so that you are well informed about her medications etc?

regards

Thanks a million. Yeah I'll definitely be with her for the discharge process from hospital. Am very nervous about it all especially because of covid and her being so immunosuppressed post op.

Hi there Just take it day by day , can’t give you any advice as a caregiver prior or post transplant but as a transplant recipient I can , I’m pleased for you and your family

I do know the nightmare you’ve been living though as my partner will vouch

I won’t mince my words as it’s still a hard slog for your mum but I’m nearly three years post transplant and back in full time at work, go the gym and back to full fitness

So if you’d like you can get in touch anytime you need a chat, and I wish your mum well

You’re welcome And seriously don’t be worried about her catching covid, I’m on immunosuppressants myself and haven’t had the vaccines haven’t kept away from family, done my own shopping daily, haven’t worn a mask been working with the public in my job, I’ve just kept my hands sanitary as much as possible, which I did before covid anyway, despite living in a so called covid hotspot haven’t had so much as a cold

Hi, 4 years post liver transplant, everyone is different but my husband went to work the day after I came home leaving me alone. As long as I didn't lift anything and had access to food and drink I was ok. I only had a shower when someone was within shouting distance as still felt very wobbly. Someone will have to take her to weekly clinic visits as she won't be able to drive for 3 months. If you use Facebook there is a group called 'liver transplant support uk ' we are all very friendly and have lots of advice.

Hope your mum has an uneventful recovery.

Hilary xx

Great news, well done to her! 15 months post TP and getting on with life. This forum is a real gem for serious liver advice and genuine conversations. Tell her to take it easy and to not rush into things however much she may feel like it.
