Cirrhosis and itching

Hello,

This symptom of itching because of cirrhosis is really annoying. I am taking a powder form of Colestyramine once a day, as per prescription, but sometimes I take 2 when it kicks off again, and I also use E45 cream for relief.

Can anyone help with any alternative for itching.

Lucky I have no nails, as they have also become brittle and just break. (So cannot do too much damage)

Thanks in advance....

Hi. My hosp doctor told me about Dermacool 1.0%. It’s a menthol cream that worked wonders for me. Stopped me scratching or rubbing. Use as often as necessary. Can get at Boots.

Hi, I see Dermacool has already been suggested but it also comes in different strengths 2.0% and 5.0% I find this one the best.

Hello Cazza

I use the same medicine and lotion as you for this horrible symptom. When my skin feels unbearably hot and prickly I also wrap my arms in a towel dampened with cold water. This can abate the stinging a wee bit. There might be another medicine that would help but you'd need to ask your GP about that.

Take care.

Hey Cazza,

My consultant prescribed naltrexone and I take that only if the antihistamine (chlorphenamine) doesn't work. Just half a tablet cuts the itch pretty much right out. I only need to use it once every few weeks. It usually treats drug addiction so I not sure it's widely prescribed. Could be worth a discussion with your consultant anyway. Causes a fair bit of paperwork initially for the consultant apparently...and despite "for itching" being on the actual label pharmacists might question it if they don't know you. It works really well for me anyway.

Kx

Ps - my first ever post!

😬🥳

Thank for replying. I think I will stick to the creams for the time being. I think my doctor's would have a frenzy if I asked for something that complicated. But you never know it might come to it, and solving with half a tablet sounds great.
