Abnormal liver test, what could it be ?

Hello everyone. I had full blood tests done recently, when I called the reception of my general practice they said they’ll book me in for a telephone appointment with my gp. He called me today and said my liver test seems abnormal and he wants to send me for liver function tests, hepatitis screen and test for liver-related autoantibodies. When I got my first test book I was expecting to maybe have iron deficiency as I was feeling very tired and just weird for the past couple of months so when he said there might be something wrong with the liver I was shocked.

I can’t help but feel extremely down about it. Has anyone had a situation like this before and know what it could be? Is there any way it couldn’t be anything serious? All I can think about is that’s LIVER, so there has to be something wrong whatever the result is, am I wrong? Not knowing what it is and having to wait to get results possibly next week is killing me. TIA everyone

It could be anything, without having the tests done its not possible to say what the cause may be. There's probably a thousand and one things it could be. Many of which are very common, quickly and easily treatable.

Liver test results are very commonly raised, they are very sensitive little beasties it seems and are easily offended by even the slightest insult. So try not to worry too much at this stage. It looks like your doctor has everything in hand so just go through the process and see what comes out the other end. Hopefully it will be something simple for you too.

It is very difficult to guess what the abnormal tests are indicating and it looks like the GP is ordering appropriate follow up tests to obtain more information.
