Abnormal liver test results

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone can offer me some suggestions here. I recently did a routine blood test as a part of my annual health check up. Here are few things that are driving me crazy.

Bilirubin - 2.0

AST - 104

ALT - 206

Alkaline phosphatase- 98

Cholesterol - 233

About me: don’t drink. Don’t smoke. Don’t do any drugs. Do take ibuprofen sometimes for headaches and stuff. Not more than about 20 tablets in a year. Just before the test I had gone to Cancun for about a week. Ate a lot. Didn’t drink except for a glass of champagne just for celebration. I have had drinks in past May be 6 years back but may be a couple in 3-4 months. I eat non veg food occasionally. 1.5 years back had a perfect blood test report. I don’t know why my AST and ALT levels are so high. Don’t exercise much but at job I do end up walking about 10k steps. Weight is about 162 lb and height is 5’8”. Age 33. Married.

Can someone please offer some suggestions about this? I am kind of freaked out. By the way I do not have any symptoms of hepatitis such as yellowing of eye or urine. No itching. Eat properly and sleep well.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

Differences in normal range for different laboratories can make it difficult to compare or comment on individual test results specifically. This is due to the different brand of tests that are used and how these are interpreted.

This forum is here to share experiences and provide support to each other and we would advise against posting any test results or asking for specific medical advice.

This is not a medical forum and should not be used to try and make diagnoses or replace advice from your own medical practitioners who have a much wider view of your health and test results.

We appreciate how worried you are and hope you can still post with regards to support and information but it is against the rules of our forum to post test results and to ask for specific medical advice. You may find The British Liver Trust publication on liver disease tests explained useful to read.

However, it really would be best to discuss your test results with your own doctors who know you best,

Kind Regards,

Discuss with your Dr. About getting a liver ultrasound and biopsy. Could be other things like Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (which can eventually lead to much worse if ignored. That's where I started but the biopsy revealed I was already stage 4!) Good to find out early. Also check kidney functions. Very possible what you ate in Cancun too so be sure to mention the trip to the Dr. Also in the meantime, consider taking Milk Thistle supplements daily for supporting healthy liver function. More chicken, less red meat, avoid shellfish, keep sodium levels lower, don't over do it with water or sports drinks until you know for sure. Best of luck to you from across the pond!

We can be unhealthy even without alcohol or smoking.

I had high ALTs up to 575 but that was during cholestasis in pregnancy.

I lowered it to below 100. Pressed carrots and apples and drunk the fresh juice. I felt like a new born as it felt so good and what my liver seemed to crave.

I had lots of oats and almonds and pomegranates for their liver cleansing and gut cleansing properties. Psyllium husks and about 8 to 12 pieces of fruit per day.

No sat. Fats. No sweets, biscuits, ice cream or chocs. No white bread. A little rice and little pasta. No black tea decaf or normal. No coffees. As much as I love tea and coffee.

Hope this helps you.

All the best

Thank you all for wonderful suggestions. Really appreciate it. I just want to say that I do follow good habits but has never been so worried. I never had to think about these things thinking I don’t drink, don’t smoke etc. this out of the blue blood test seems like a wake up call for me. A doctor friend of mine did advise me to eat a lot of carrots and fruits. I am doing that. Including oats in my diet. I hope for the best. My general physician has prescribed a suit of blood tests. Results should likely be coming tomorrow. Will update and let you know what I found out.

Once again, I would like to sincerely that you all for your help. Take care and god bless.

Please do..LFT,KFT,Hepatitis B and C, ANA, ASMA, LKM ,Sugar fasting and ultrasound. All these test will give you a clear direction on your problem..Fibroscan...You readings are high but can be controlled with dietary modification

The above advice is great. You need to get those tests for NAFLD, autoimmune AIH blood tests. Ultrasound, doctor may want to do a biopsy. A fibroscan can be good to look at CAP score to see how fatty your liver is. Could even br a gallbladder issue. Labs tell a story, drinking and drugs normally result in a AST being higher then the ALT. NAFLD, gallbladder issue can cause ALT to be higher then AST. Blockage can cause Bilirubin to be high. You should have all hepatitis panels done as well. Jaundice is late stage you can have hepatitis and not have an ounce of jaundice.
