Tired : Hi all I was just wondering if... - British Liver Trust
Tired
Absolutely. That was probably the main symptom for me for most of the time I had cirrhosis.
I would advice you to speak with your GP. You might be anemic. You may require some iron medication due to possible Iron-deficiency.
Please don't start taking any supplements before speaking with your doctor first.
Best Wishes
Richard
Hi Richard-Allen I am already prescribed iron tablets from my doctor I take 2 a day thanks Mary x
Mary - Your pills may not be enough. I recently was on them for two months for low iron and was sleeping so much (14-18 hours a night), fatigued (hard to walk 30 feet without being out of breath), was seeing double and felt somewhat confused. A quick visit to the hematologist for labs revealed my iron was slowly getting better yet still low, so I begged for the iron infusion (took a call from my sister to convince the doctor as well) and they gave me two infusions 8 days apart. The difference is night and day. I am no longer confused or sleeping for hours, can walk without breathlessness and feel so much better.
Be persistent to get the support you need!

Hi Mary,
We would suggest it may be a good idea to inform your GP of this, they will be able to assess if you need blood tests to investigate any additional cause of the fatigue.
Hi Mary. If you are sleeping then don’t worry, it is because your body is not capable probably, well, your liver, of carrying out normal routine tasks without working hard. A very common side effect of cirrhotic liver can be insomnia and crazy itching, honestly, I would go for the tiredness until you can identify if there’s any other reason. Can I ask you please...are you overweight? Do you have a salt restriction? Have you been diagnosed with ascites or odema? Do you do any exercise? It can all help us get a more rounded out picture. What I would say is well done on coming on here, not easy to trust strangers with your problems. Hang in there 😁
Hi Cammeag I am waiting to see a dietian as I got diagnosed September last year. Also I will be honest with you I don't exercise because I am to frightened to go out of the house because of covid. Also I am not sure about my weight I weigh 11 stone 11 and my height is 5ft 3ins so not sure to be honest with you I am quite new to all of this until I see a dietian I know that I am not anomic because I am on iron tablets prescribed by my doctor so not sure what to do or what to say thanks Mary x
This might seem contraindicatory when you feel so tired but actually exercise is really good for it. Prof at Birmingham speaking to the AIH Support group said that when suffering from fatigue it's actually good to get some exercise (preferably outdoors) is great for boosting endorphins and energy levels.Fatigue has been my hubbies main symptom since before diagnosis sometimes so chronic it hasn't just been mental but a total body and mind fatigue needing bed rest almost every day. For some time now we've had a minimum of a mile walk round our village and recently hubby has been pushing himself (and me) to go further and further even tackling some of the Galloway Hills in recent days and weeks.
It really boosts his sense of well being and energy levels and ok he's tired afterwards it is nothing like those earlier years where he was in bed for a portion of every day.
Katie
Hi. You are doing so well, so keep, going, things will get better. Katy is absolutely right about exercise and it will be completely the opposite of what your body wants to do right now. In the early days of my diagnosis and treatment I had no exercise. My muscles atrophied and my energy was zero. Even then I couldn’t sleep. I bought a mobility scooter (still in my hall), it was onwards and upwards from there. First the fresh air, then jumping off and doing a hundred feet and building every day. You just need to overcome the embarrassment. Please keep going and keep us updated.
