Hello everyone I’m new here. I had a fibro scan a week ago and based on my IQR they recoment I retake the test again. Based on the results I have severe fibrosis F3 11.3 kpa 272db/m S0 steatosis and an IQR of 50%. My BMI is 35. I am 38 years old. Can someone help me with these results. I haven’t been able to sleep because I’m so worried. I have small children that need me.

I don’t think we can comment on medical figures but maybe some people who have had a fibro scan might advise you of their experience. It sounds as if they are unsure that the data is correct to ask you to have the scan again. Have they given you a new date?

No, they have not given me a date yet. I just read in the comments: given that the IQR is 50% I would recommend repeating the study for greater accuracy GI will contact the patient. That’s what it said in the comments.

The IQR figure is the range between the lowest of your readings and the highest. It's the average of all the readings taken that give your kPa and CAP figures, however, it does sound like they are not too happy with the IQR figure and are suggesting the retest for accuracy sake.

Fibroscan can also give an over inflated figure if you currently have liver inflammation so fibroscan alone isn't accurate enough to give you a definitive diagnosis - it needs to be done in conjunction with bloods and medical history.

Also, fibroscan has different cut off points where it jumps up the scale from F0 through to F4 based upon what the underlying cause of the liver ill health is (i.e. the scale for alcohol is different than the scale for non-alcohol related fatty liver, different for Viral Hepatitis or Auto Immune conditions so the underlying cause is also important).

It would appear that you do have some degree of fatty liver and if that CAP score of 272 is accurate it puts you in the S2 range of fatty liver (34%-66% of the liver is fatty).

If you can make any lifestyle changes that can improve your weight and exercise, Fatty Liver is reversible but you do need to heed the warning and make the changes. If you make changes in line with NAFLD just now it will help your liver no end whilst awaiting the follow up tests and discussion with doctor. britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

First of all, please calm down. The best news is that you are alive. The second best news is that your liver is a remarkable organ, maybe the most remarkable organ in the human body. The liver is the only organ with the ability to regenerate itself. There have been cases where people have lost half their liver, a full 50% gone, and yet, the remaining part was able to grow itself back to a full liver. So, take heart, your liver wants to heal itself. Your job is to help your liver to heal itself by doing all you can to live a healthy life. Obviously, don't drink alcohol. But also, make sure that every single thing that you put into your mouth helps your liver. Cut back on meat and dairy, if you have fatty liver disease. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, especially berries. These have been shown to decrease liver enzymes. I personally believe that milk is one of the most destructive things we drink. So kiss milk and cheese goodbye. We humans are not supposed to drink the secretions of other animals and that's what milk is. In fact, unless we are babies not yet able to eat solid food, we are not supposed to drink human milk either. Little wonder that our liver gets inflamed after a lifetime of poor eating. The other thing to do is to follow your doctor's orders. Take your medications faithfully. Never stop unless your doctor says so. Also, make sure that sure are getting enough Vitamin D. If you live in Northern Europe, the answer for all of us is "no", so get yourself a supplement of Vitamin D3. Finally, walk every day and stay on your feet. Be active. Be positive.

If you give up dairy with liver disease, it really should be done with medical advice.

If calcium deficiency is very severe or acute there can be muscle spasm or cramping, tingling, or burning sensation around the mouth and fingers, facial spasms and tics, seizures, and tremors. The loss of calcium from bone is called osteopenia when it is mild and osteoporosis when it is severe.

Hi,

Whoever performed the FibroScan has a duty of care to explain the findings. Can you perhaps contact them?

Best wishes.

Totally agree --i have had 2 fibroscans but neither time were results explained I got results in post which is pointless if you dont understand results .I made a point of asking but was dismissed

You may want to read our 'Patient Charter' that details the care you should expect to receive if you are diagnosed with a liver condition in the UK.

The other thing I forgot to add is that the fibroscan is just snapshot of where you are today. These scores can drop back into normal range, if you follow a healthy lifestyle and take your meds. On this site, you will find comments from people whose fibroscan scores improved over time.

If you suggest banning meat and animal products for human consumption, will you please give correct advice and examples on how people with liver disease can obtain the essential protein they need in order that they don't suffer muscle wastage etc please , bearing in mind supliments should only be prescribed by their doctor or specialist.

I just want to say that humans are very rarely protein deficient, vegetarians have little problems with protein deficiency. Most vegetables have protein! Even lettuce, I know weird right? I would suggest anyone that wants to change their diet for the best to seek out a nutritionist (and not one that only purports a diet fad). Personally, I like a diet with oily fish, fresh veggies, low fat cuts of high quality meats, fresh fruits, no processed food or tons of sugar, dairy is inflammatory, so I use almond milk but hmmmm cheese is good. :)

With liver disease a nutricianists/ dieticians advice is essential.

That looks like a pretty good healthy diet to me 😊

Whilst the forum welcomes a difference of opinion and dietary beliefs, as most forum members have suggested, - before undertaking significant dietary changes - please discuss with your own doctors or dietitian.
