Hi, I’ve recently been diagnosed with pbc. I had a fibroscan a few weeks ago & the results I received were as follows:

Cap 250

Kpa 3.7

IQR 15%

Can anyone tell me what these mean pls as I have no idea. Can’t get to see the dr.

Tia

Hi Tia. I recently had a fibroscan too. The nurse explained the scores as CAP - this measures the fat level in your liver. This I scored òut of 400. The KPa is the stiffness of the liver. This is measured out of 75.

There are charts online for both kPA and CAP. IQR I have no idea at all.

Hope this helps. Best wishes Golly

Hi Golly123, thanks for the reply, I will try to find the charts online but don’t really like to look as it might be bad news.

I think you will find it is good news actually. Your Kpa score is very low which is very good. Best wishes Jo

For PBC anything under 8.5 kPa is F0-F1 fibrosis i.e. none to little fibrosis. A CAP score of 250 is in the Steatosis grade 1 - CAP score of between 238 & 260 Less than ⅓ (11% to 33%) of the liver is showing fatty change. (IQR is just part of the calculation method for the scoring system - reflecting the accuracy of the result). Only the kPa and Cap scores are really important to you.

What do the numbers mean?

The read out from the machine includes a number of figures including:

median liver stiffness, an average of the readings expressed in kiloPascals (kPa). This is the quoted liver stiffness measurement and the most important output

IQR (interquartile range) quoted as an absolute number or as a percentage of the median. This number should be less than 1/3 or 30% of the median for a valid, high quality reading

CAP (controlled attenuation parameter), expressed in decibels/metre (dB/m). This is not available on all machines, but is a measure of how much signal is absorbed by the liver and correlates to a degree with the amount of fat in the liver.

So pretty good news.

Thank you AyrshireK, puts my mind at ease a little. Can the scores be reduced in any way?

Work on the fatty liver by following the guidance for Non Alcohol Related Fatty liver disease which is basically healthy diet and exercise - britishlivertrust.org.uk/do...

As regards kPa it's probably the lowest i"ve ever seen being reported on the forum. Hopefully as your Primary Biliary Cholangitis is controlled it should pevent any worsening of the figure.
