Hello Joe
I had my gall bladder removed in the early 1990s and I'm still here to tell the tale. Any surgery comes with some element of risk and your surgeon will explain this to you but gall bladder removal is a well practiced operation. Your other conditions may add to the risk but this is best discussed with a doctor.
I had open surgery removal involving the surgeon making an incision into the abdomen several inches long. I cannot pretend it wasn't painful immediately after the operation as the surgery cuts through abdominal muscles so trying to sit up after the operation was painful for a while but soon resolves.
When I had my op, keyhole surgery for removal, which is much less invasive, was just starting to become more widely used. As I understand it, this involves just 3 small incisions around the belly button and you don't suffer as much post operative pain, if any.
My mum, dad and an aunt all had their gall bladder removed and it did not cause any long term problems.
I hope that helps. Good luck.
Hi I too have cirrhosis and gallstones. My consultant told me that they do not like to operate if like me you bleed easily (low blood count). However, they will do the procedure if you in a lot of pain. I am sure there are people here who have had this operation without any problems.
I wish you all the best
Have they actually talked about removing your gall bladder?
Even with gallstones they don't always require removal.
My hubby was told he had gallstones some years ago and consultant said unless they cause any trouble then all gets left alone.

Hi joeblack1801 I have just come out of kings college hospital after going into East Surrey hospital with gallstone problems they transferred me to kings for a procedure that involves an endoscopy and they pulled the gallstone out then fitted me with a stent to help the other gallstones to come out easier. Now my story ends in really good news because they kept me in in all I was in for a month but came out on the liver transplant list 🎉🎉. They do not like removing the gallbladder when you have cirrhosis because the gallbladder is part of the liver and it can cause all kinds of problems. So my main point is that they have a lot of different ways to treat gallstones problems talk to your surgeon and they may come up with a way none of us know 🤷🏻good luck because I know how much it hurts.

Good afternoon joeblack1801,
I can see our forum members are sharing their experiences.
I have added the link to our information on gallstones.

Hi, don't be worried about having your gallbladder removed, I had mine out by keyhole, and didn't even need to stay in overnight. If your gallstones get lodged in your pancreatic duct and cause pancreatitis, you'll be in a lot moree pain than from a simple operation. Please seek advice
