Many people who have received their liver transplant at the QE, will most likely know of Alan Hyde.
Alan has been a strong supporter of the QE for over 14-years, visiting patients on the liver transplant ward (726), Alan was also chairman of the “Queen Elizabeth Liver Patients Support Group”, and featured in several liver-related videos on behalf of the QE.
It is with deep regret and sadness that I have to report that Alan passed away this morning. I believe Alan succumbed to kidney failure, and that he had been poorly for some time.
I know that Alan shall be sadly missed by all that have known him over the years.
I had pleasure of long chats from Alan 4 years ago when I was first referred to QEHB , such a wonderful gentleman with intense knowledge and most helpful .
Many thanks for the heads up on that. I wrote back in Feb 2019 to Cherry West
who was the then Executive Chief Operating Officer of the QE. I pointed out Alan's 14-years of voluntary service to the QE, visiting patients on the ward, and attending all the pre-assessment meetings. He also featured in three videos on behalf of the QE.
What some people may not realise is that when he did the ward visits on a Wednesday night, he would often travel by bus to get there. Sometimes it would take him two hours, but he always made it even in bad weather. He was one of those heroes we all clapped for. When I wrote that letter, I wanted to nominate Alan for an award. Just a sort of thank you for all the work and effort he’d made. Cherry West said that they would arrange something, but they never did, and now it’s too late.
I have now written to Jacqui Smith, Chairperson of the QE and have made my disappointment known. They should have honoured him when he was alive.
