Im 37 struggling to come to terms with a Liver Transplant advised April 19’

I have AIH/PSC/UC

Absolutely scared after going through surgery for clearance of stones in intrahepatic bile ducts + removal of gall bladder and liver biopsy recently and trying to recover.

I have had repeated cholangitis and ERCPS and required admission in Hosptl repeatedly previous to the surgery mentioned above.

I pray TP will be accepted by QE Birmingham Hosptl. Im unsure of what follows and worry constantly for my young children!

ANY HELP OUT THERE I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL OF IN ADVANCE X

My wife had a liver transplant her did not go well but she did come out the other end fine and well, it was probabilly the best thing she has ever done she is now back to how she used to be before the liver problems caused her problems in normal life, also the day after the op I went to see her and asked where my wife was I can honestly say she looked 10 years younger and that was the day afte.

If you need it you will feel much much better after it is done, they do loads of them so they are very good at them so do not worry about having it done I know that is easy to say also they now last a very long time when I was in the hospital with my wife I met a gent who had a liver transplant and his was 35 years ago and as they impove that will get longer

all i can say is do exactly what they tell you

if before your op you start to go off planet earth your family are best to spot that get to the hospital it means your blood has gone toxic and is screwing your brain up

you will come out the other side and think how stupid was i to worry

I had gall stones, removal of gall bladder and PSC but without UC. I was about 10-12 years after gall bladder removal before transplant (TP) in 2003 (age 49). Never felt really ill or tired during that time but PSC was diagnosed subsequent to gall bladder op.

For next 10 years or so I slowly found it difficult to concentrate on work but put it down to increasing age. Started a 3 year part time Masters degree about 2 years before TP but suspended studies after the TP. Had a couple of years off studying but later returned to complete the degree. Carried on working the whole time except for about 4 months off work immediately after TP and didn't have sick leave for any reason for the next 3 years. Got two promotions at work to Head of Department but after a few of years decided to change jobs for a part time one elsewhere (concentration problems).

I don't know if my post TP health experience is typical (I know some people have problems) but you can lead a pretty normal life after PSC and TP. Good luck.

Hello, sorry to respond late.

All I can personally add is that you will be in absolutely the very best hands at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. I cannot praise them enough.

You will feel so much better when they give you a treatment plan and you are able to look forward to your future.

They do over 300 transplants a year and are about to celebrate their 5,000th.
