Use of PNEUMOCOCCAL vaccine for transplantees in the Covid-19 era

Should people with suppressed immune systems be advised to have this vaccine?

I read that some people dying of Covid actually die of pneumonia. Would it potentially save some people. The cost to the NHS is less than £9 or £17 for a pre-filled syringe.

I've had pneumonia vaccination, flu vaccination, Hepatitis A and B as recommended by my liver consultant.

I assumed they were given to all liver disease patients

Good jab, but Flu jab only for me. 🤔

Anyone in England is offered the flu jab is also offered the pneumonia jab as well except if they had it last year - it is effective for two years. So we were told. But not knowing where in the world you live feckle.....

in reply to ThreeSmiles

Under Boris's wing. NHS / GP only offers me the annual Flu jab nowt else. 🤔

Perhaps if you ask.

Found the doors locked today. No notice on the door. GP Closed y/day after checking online.

I usually get annual reminder by letter now text. Never a mention of anything other than Flu. Maybe ask if I get the chance. 🤔

Thanks for the reply. I get the flu jabs but never had the pneumonia one recommended.

Hi.

I had flu jab in October and pneumonia in 2018

in reply to PeterP54

I've had the pneumonia jab but not the flu one ! Bad I know !

Why did you not have the flu jab? Very naughty Trish!

Mainly because a number of my friends and most of all Derek's family were taken really poorly after the jab a few years back so I avoided it!

Your telling me off well deserved now I guess.

Yes! Especially since the “formula” of the flu jab changes every year...and we are all different - some more different than others 😀.

<joke>

I know that but unfortunately I'm a stubborn wee soul and still stood her ground and said no! To be honest with the current situation do you think the jab would have made any difference if I'd had it or not? I'll guess we'll never know!

🙄

No it wouldn't make any difference to whether or not you catch cv19.

It is perfectly normal to get a mild dose of flu after having a flu jab. The vaccine gives it to you in a mild form to give you immunity against the disease thats how vaccines work . So you really should have them in future.

Well done on FINALLY diving!

I asked about that Laura when I had the flu jab because after having the jab once I had a terrible cold.

They told me that I would get no flu symptoms or cold symptoms as the vaccine is inert.

They said that he fact that I got a cold after was just coincidence.

That's interesting. I've always been told that it is possible to feel unwell following any vaccination, as with the kid's measles, mumps and rubella. Doesn't happen to everyone but it is possible

I think that before they started using the inert vaccine with the flu that that was true and always what we believed. Can't speak for the other vaccines, just the flu one that I discussed with the nurse administering it,

Technology marches on :-) :-)

I have only ever been offered the flu vaccine and yet I have a sister-in law who has had the flu, pneumonia and the shingles jab :-(

Thank you for everyone's responses. Seems like there is no common treatment offered to patients. Either that means recommendations are specifically tailored to the individual, or there is no common policy across the piece.

Think I shall try to find liver nurse at St James or failing that my GP.

Update.

Just spoken with St James's. Apparently they recommend the pneumonia vaccine every 5 years. Awaiting a call back to make arrangements with my GP.
