Evening all

I noticed on a previous post a reference to Ferritin tests, I dont think I have ever seen this test on my exhaustive list! Is it the same test as checking your HB to see if your anaemic or is it something else (Dr. dreaded Google says) to do with ' a protein in the body that contains iron'. Many thanks as always

Good afternoon LHR007,

Ferritin is the protein that stores iron in the tissues. Small amounts of ferritin are found in the blood serum and as the amount of iron in your body increases, so do the levels of ferritin in the serum.

Haemoglobin is a protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen to your body's organs and tissues and transports carbon dioxide from your organs and tissues back to your lungs

Occasionally in liver disease, ferritin levels are checked as it may assist in making a diagnosis. Ferritin can become elevated due to alcohol consumption or in the presence of other liver conditions - most recognised is haemochromatosis .

If you have concerns, please discuss testing with your own doctors.

I hope this helps ,
