Try this. It tastes bad, but I think it’s working. Just chug it. My liver pain is much improved after doing this for 2 weeks.
Kale smoothie
- 1 large handful (or 2-3 small handfuls) of kale (stems and all)
Use "Organic Tuscan Kale" from Trader Joe’s - it's in the fresh section, freeze it immediately when you get home and it keeps very long time in the freezer (any high quality organic bagged kale)
- 8 ounces of water (more or less, no ice is needed since the kale and berries are frozen)
- About a cup (handful) of any frozen berries or frozen strawberry banana chunks mix from kroger or anywhere (fresh berries and banana are also fine, but frozen is more convenient)
- Use as much kale and as little fruit as possible, as fruit contains fructose which is bad for the liver. 1 cup of fruit max (or less), no fruit juice.
Blend in any blender for a couple minutes (blend it quite a bit or it's too chunky to drink)
Note: this is extremely high fiber. One a day max. Reduce if it's causing constipation (every other day or so).
Remember: minimize fruit (and all fructose), sugar, and grain based carbs. Eat additional beef and eggs (with yolk) when available, as these benefit liver function and liver healing.

Fructose is the type of sugar that fruit produces, and it’s the sweetest of all the naturally occurring sugars.
Additionally, unlike sugar, fructose is metabolized using a very similar metabolic pathway as alcohol. Instead of creating an insulin response, fructose has to be metabolized directly in the liver.
With that said, I think a cup of frozen strawberries and blueberries mixed with a larger amount of kale is absolutely a net positive.
We need the fiber and choline found in kale to help reduce our liver fat
Additionally, we need methionine (beef and egg yolks).
Avoid alcohol, sugar, and grain based carbs.
Leafy plant based carbs and nutrient rich animal proteins are key to putting the liver in a position to recover.

It is really positive that you are feeling the benefits of drinking the smoothies. However, we would always suggest that if anyone has a fatty to liver to speak with their own doctors first for specific diet advice.

When it come to matters like these, I think everyone needs to be their own advocate, and at the same time trust their doctors and medical professionals.
Anyone with a hypo thyroid issue may also want to consider adding a little iodine to their diet if they’re drinking these kale shakes every day. This can be done with a kelp supplement, or by snacking on seaweed occasionally. This is generally usually not a concern, but check with your doctor and get some seaweed snack packs (They’re a hell of a lot better than a kale shake).
My dietician told me to reduce red meat in my diet, not increase it. I have a fatty liver, but already have cirrhosis too. Protein is key, high quality protein.
Kale is disgusting, but I guess if you don't eat vegetables juicing is one way to increase your intake of them. Whatever. You do you.
This ain’t the food network, but your dietician is more highly qualified than me to give diet advice.
I recommend blending over juicing. You want to make sure you’re ingesting all that disgusting vegetable fiber.
Stems and all. Adjust with berries to make it tolerable. Blend for up to 3 minutes if you have a cheap blender. Possibly less with a good blender (I wouldn’t know, my blender sucks).
Once you have removed the foods and or alcoholic drinks from your diet which may have caused the fatty liver and you exercise regularly, the liver needs no suppliments to heal it, it just needs time.
Ok but please be aware on this forum the majority of people have more than fatty liver caused by just an irresponsible relationship with alcohol. Many of them have gone way beyond fatty liver caused by various reasons and are suffering greatly from cirrhosis, had transplants, waiting for transplants, suffer severe pain on a daily basis and require far far more than another faddy food idea. I wonder if these sorts of things are best placed on a forum for drinkers looking to become ex drinkers rather than amongst people suffering with severe liver diseases.

There are a lot of vegetables I don’t particularly like such as broccoli, beetroot, kale and spinach, but I’m happy to juice these. Yes, it’s better to eat the complete item to get the fibre too, but as that’s not going to happen, juicing’s great.
l don't have any kind of liver disease l'm just the widow of an alcoholic who had liver disease, liver failure, kidney failure and pneumonia. I'm here supporting spouces who are struggling, going through the same as l did. l also understand the importance of a healthy diet, which is easy to digest and with flavours to enjoy and that removing the bad stuff is key .
Is fruit really a no-no? If so I am done for. I eat eggs, Syr and chick peas for protein as I cant eat any meat or fish. But I have unlimited fruit daily: strawberries, pomegranate, mango, bananas, grapes, kiwi and pineapple. Every day. If I have to stop this I’m seriously questioning what’s the point as it’s my only enjoyment in food.
You need some serious kelp. My end stage decompensated cirrhotic liver survived on copious amounts of fruits, I could not cope with the lactulose. This was with the approval of both my Heptologist and Gastroenterologist Consultants.
Diet fads etc have no real place on a forum dealing with liver disease. Dietary advice should be given to individual patients by medically qualified dieticians.
My dietician also said I could eat an unlimited amount of fruit. Fructose is NOT bad for you, it is glucose that is the culprit in developing insulin resistance. Fructose also tastes sweeter.
Well, most things are metabolized in the liver, that's the liver's job and is part of the digestive process.
Do a little research on sucrose versus glucose versus fructose and you will be amazed!💡Then watch for hidden sugars in prepared foods (high fructose corn syrup is a food processing waste product!) and you will quickly find the metabolic culprit in a massive wave of liver disease.
