What pain relief is ok for Liver pain after eating?

Any advice regarding what pain relief I can take with fatty liver disease? I’ve just been diagnosed with it and my liver is inflamed. I get a throbbing stomach pain just after eating? I don’t want to take ibuprofen as I worry this might not be good for me - can I take co-codemal (Paracetamol & Codeine)

Hi kf

Perhaps quickest way to find some answers is to look at the other posts on this subject.

For example you could look at the post from davianne called

“Pain relief for liver disease sufferer's.”

It’s only a month old!

Just a click away - see “Related Posts” on the right 👍

Also remember to ask your Consultant for proper medical advice when you next see him/her or ring for some help....

Good luck and hope you can feel better soon!

Hi

I was told by my liver consultant ibuprofen is a big no no and paracetamol can be taken in small doses depending on the severity of liver damage. I take tramadol as I have been left with intense neurological pain following guillain-barre syndrome, I have been assured my liver consultant that this medication is kinder on the liver than other forms of strong pain relief.

I'm unsure about co-codamol. I don't know if any of this helps?

Hi Kathy.

I have the same problem, and have found it difficult to get liver friendly pain relief. The latest info from my hepatologist, just 2 weeks ago, was paracetamol, and codeine, but in reduced quantities than would be OK for people with healthy livers. It does say on the pamphlet with the codeine ....."not suitable for people with chronic liver disease", but i don't know if fatty liver comes into that category. I have F4 cirrhosis, so definitely do.

I recently had a bad cough and cold, which took 16 days to shift when prescribed antibiotics, and the capsule pain when having a coughing fit was off the scale, and brought tears to my eyes.

It seems that every doc has their own opinion on what is suitable, so If I were you, I would ask yours to be on the safe side.

Hope this helps,

David

I understand thanks chick

Good morning Kathyfreddie,

I see our lovely forum members have already said, but I simply reiterate the need to discuss with your own doctors. They will know your own medical case and are best placed to advise and prescribe appropriate medication.

Also, should your symptoms worsen , contact NHS 111 for more urgent help/support

I hope you feel better soon,

Trust9

Drugs are complicated. You need to think of it from the clinicians side. Basically all drugs are bad for you in one way or another but the goal is to balance to to minimise pain with the least side effects. This makes any pain management very individual and only you consultants can advise you.

Talk with them and usually they will explain the risk and benefits and you can make your own judgment.

I have found a regime that works for me but I’m also aware that it is damaging other parts of my body. But, for me this is acceptable as it allows me to function nearly pain free.

Good luck and I hope you find the right balance for you - Peter
