What do you guys use for medium pain relief?

Before all of this and what was probably a contributing factor I just took the usual medium prescribed pain killers (codeine 30/500) to manage injuries achieved while running out of talent on race tracks on motorbikes and the associated injuries.

Similar injuries sustained in race cars and karts when I decided bikes were too dangerous.

It's been mentioned that I should avoid paracetamol as it annoys the liver and brufen as it annoys the stomach. So what's left?

Doc have me a short prescription of Dihydrocodeine and the other suggestion was tramadol. I chose the former as tramadol scares me. They both do for addiction etc. But what do we take? Headaches, man flu etc...

The floor is yours you lovely people.

That's really a question for your own doctor as it does depend on your level of damage.

My hubby with cirrhosis is allowed (and was indeed prescribed) paracetemol by the liver team for headaches, post banding pain etc. He has to take lower than the maximum daily dose, it's generally only at overdose levels that paracetemol is dangerous to the liver.

Ibuprofen and all other Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatories (NASAID's) are a no no as they can lead to problematic bleeding.

Hubby was also prescribe oramorph and tramadol by liver transplant hospital following a painful aneurysm embolization operation though he didn't take that for long at all.

As I said, this is a question you must ask your own doctors.

Thanks Katie and indeed I have an appointment tomorrow however I've had a thumping headache and sore back all day and wondered what everyone had been taken and maybe to aid some conversation with the doc

thanks and hope you're well.

Glad you've got an appointment to ask the question. As I say, hubby takes paracetemol on advice of his liver specialist, he gets regular headaches and when he was having his banding every few weeks it's what he was told to take for pain.

Your doctor should clear it up for you.

I think you've gotten good advice. I just wanted to tell you that your reason for seeking pain relief "to manage injuries achieved while running out of talent" tickled my funny bone! 😜😅👍

Sad but true. I reckon there's a fair bit of my skin and leathers that make up some of the land mass at knockhill.

Morning!!

Well, I was prescribed paracetamol post tp, in fact was only on morphine for a couple of days and then just paracetamol with the odd boost of oramorph when a nasty procedure was needed!! Left hosp with a huge box of paracetamol!!

Was told pre transplant not to take ibuprofen, only paracetamol.....

Good morning,

As your fellow forum users have suggested, this is something you definitely need to discuss with your own doctor. A medication that is OK for one person may not be for someone else so please go with what your own medical team suggest.

Hi when I was diagnosed with cirrhosis nearly 3 years ago I had the same question for my consultant. He advised me I could take paracetamol, only in very small quantities say 1/2 tablet initially

I also underwent major surgery (not liver related!⁶) at the end of March 2019. For the pain relief i was given oramorph 3 times and up to 8 standad tramadol tablets a day. I have been kept on 8 a day at present .

wife took tramadol works well and she had no problems with it, I think it only becomes a problem when you throw loads of it down your thoat everyday for a long period she only took it as and when needed

Wee update. Spoke to the doc and they have prescribed just straight 30mg codeine to be taken only when required so happy with that.

Paracetamol, as I was given post transplant in hospital. I had a lengthy discussion with my hepatologist who explained to me that basically this ned is fine as long as it's not abused and is for short term relief. I still, ocassionally use it and I've encountered no problems. I would, however, check with your consultant or call your TP coordinators to get the green light from them. Also you should not take any meds, oral or otherwise, that contain Ibuferon.

My consultant said up to 8 paracetamol a day is ok, but follows up with saying only if its really needed.

My GP seems to prefer codeine but warns that constipation is a common side effect.

For me paracetamol seems to work better than codeine but that's just me.
