Hey I’ve been trying to sort my bucket list of things I really want to do. I’m AIH and take steroids and immune suppressants, liver functions are stable...
So I would really love to have a tattoo, has anyone out there had a tattoo on above mentioned meds?
Hi Sudio, this is a topic which is discussed regularly on the AIH Facebook page with many of the participants having had them done even on steroids and immune suppressants. One member of the Facebook group is even a tattoo artist so knows the trade side of things. Guidance involves only having them done when you are fairly stable numbers wise, making sure the parlour you go to is as clean as possible - no ink sharing etc. etc. Also, being aware that they can take longer to heal and there is a slightly increased infection risk with the immune suppressant side of things.
Some people have been told no by their doctors just due to the increased risks.
Best bet would be to run it past your doctor just to be sure of your safety.
Hello, I recently asked my hepatologist if I could have my existing tattoos recoloured and I was met with a resounding NO! My bloods since transplant have been great but he still was adamant that I should not go ahesd and have them done. He asked me if it was even worth taking the smallest of a chance and putting my self at risk when this procedure wasn't necessary? Personally, after thinking about it, I thought that he was right. Would I sit and eat unosturised cheese and yogurt et al?
That cod cause the risk of infection? No I wouldn't. I think that this s personal choice and as adults we make informed choices. I must admit in doing some limited research I've read of more good outcomes than bad.
Hi I’m post transplant n on all sorts of meds like yourself n I’ve had a tattoo since just make sure you go to a professional tattooists n it’s keep clean ask about healing creams for after you had it done all the best
Hi Hidden
We would definitely suggest that you discuss your tattoo ideas with your own liver specialsit who really would be best placed to advise if it is safe for you.
If they do agree that it is medically safe to proceed, then we would also suggest that it is important to make sure that only sterile needles are used in the tattoo parlour- and if possible see that the needles come from a new sterile pack.
Hi Sudio, Have you ever seen Cara Delavigne's temporary tattoos she wore to the 2015 Met Gala? I'm thinking to try something like that first, obviously not on that scale. In fact, it may be more difficult to find that around here but it could be fun to try.
If your doctors say yes then go for it. A couple of bits of advice ...
It's addictive so you may want more.
For healing I strongly recommend a product called Tattoo Goo - it heals mine in just over a week with no scanning if applied 3 times a day.
If you go for white be warned it can disappear quickly. I was upset when mine faded away in 2 months .. white parts only - apparently it often takes extra layers- I thought that was asking for trouble building it up so left it.
