Not autoimmune after all

GrandmaDylan profile image
30 Replies

After months of tests, biopsies, scans and gastroscopies the head honcho at Manchester Royal has decided that my cirrhosis is due to fatty liver, not autoimmune hepatitis after all. The consultant I was seeing first, prescribed steroids and aza and lactulose but I was resistant to start them due to previous problems with steroids and really serious side effects from aza plus becoming immuno suppressed. My second consultant was prepared for me to start the drugs but wasn't 100% convinced it was aih and so he saught the opinion of the hepatologist who deals with tricky cases. After studying my test results and biopsy he concluded that I probably have cirrhosis due to fatty liver. This is really good news and I am going to knuckle down and lose some weight. I've also been told to drink moderate amounts of coffee as it's been proven to help the liver. Sod's law that I don't like coffee ☕😒 I also don't really like protein either. Why can't tea and cake be good for the liver? 🍰

Hey up Debs

I know they’re different but I don’t know the different impacts they have.. but as long as you’re happy/relieved I think that that is all that matters!

Good luck with the coffee and “diet”!

Wow, how odd to have all this back-and-forth! It sounds like the fatty liver diagnosis is better than AH because you have more control over the situation, is that correct? If that’s the case, I am happy for you ... Although, I wish that you (nor anyone) did not have Cirrhosis at all, of course. All the best, Deb, and good luck with your new lifestyle goals. You can do this! ☺️

I had a similar route to diagnosis. Mine was via breast cancer. The treatment pushed me to cirrhosis as it is hepatotoxic but it is such a rare response that the weren't convinced. The issue is, more women are entering breast cancer treatment with fatty liver--mine was and I was huge. I have lost 85 lbs, my cirrhosis is now considered F3 fibrosis and they are stunned at my progress so far. I was also directed to drink coffee...and I loathe the stuff. Well, I did but don't mind it now. I put a drop or two of vanilla in it and we bought a plug in percolator which I prefer to drip/filter. Instant is just as effective and decaf is fine too. Like you, I prefer a vat of tea. Good luck with your journey, Liz

Decaf just as good as regular coffee for the liver?

jak547 profile image
jak547 in reply to VeeWat

I think most studies have shown the decaf doesn't work as good but for some reason people don't get the same results from other caffeinated drinks, so t is not just the caffeine but a combination of the properties of the coffee and the caffeine

Thanks, I don’t do caffeine anymore but still love my decaf.

Whoa! Grandma D I had to read this twice to believe it! This is far better news than AIH as far as treatment goes.🙂

Tea is my favorite and it is good for the liver. Just doesnt yeild the results on paper that coffee does unfortunately. I hated coffee with a passion but i have since started to like it. It took a few weeks of forcing it on myself but I almost crave it now.

lt would be nice if cake were a good thing for the liver wouldnt it? Lol. I wish a nice shiraz or Cabernet was as well (yum). But alas, no dice.

Im still in shock to have read this my oh my. You must feel relived! Some lifestyle changes are definately going to help so much now.

Hi there good news I think 🤔. Not that I know much about anything really. However, I believe you can do this diet really helps I am told. So, I am sending virtual hugs and oodles of confidence in you. Great news.

That's good news grandma D, no horrible drugs and sude effects 😁. Try a no added sugar coffee syrup in it? I like my espresso 'medicine' with just a little milk froth n a sweetener but I can understand people not liking it, it's a strong taste. As for protein, low fat yogurts good, eggs, tuna , beans. Just watch for hidden sugars, I'm so much more aware of how much sugar I eat now, people slag sweeteners off but I know they're not putting fat in my liver like sugar. Xxxx

Thank you all for your positive comments. I'm just so glad that I wouldn't start the toxic medication until there was a 100% confirmation that I really needed to. My youngest daughter who is a biomedical scientist was almost crying with relief when I told her the news. Hope you all have a lovely weekend and for those of us who are mum's, enjoy mother's day. They've really put you through it this last year! Your case just highlights how difficult it can be to pin down a liver diagnosis. I'm glad you now have more control over improving your liver function; it must be a huge relief knowing you can remove the source of damage with weight loss and exercise. All the best - we'll all be here to support you in your efforts. :)

Great news, Grandma D! I am SO glad you don't have to deal with those steroids and meds after all! ❤️ Shame you don't like coffee. But then again, there was a time when I didn't like coffee, either (at least not without a TON of cream and sugar!)...and now here I am giving it up for Lent for the second year in a row because I crave it on a daily basis. Go figure. 😜

Hi. That's all a bit confusing but fatty liver being the lesser of 2 evils? I drink loads of coffee now which would be even better with cake and choccy biscuits. I hope this makes things a bit better for you and lessen the need for the dreaded steroids. Take care.

Its good news but if you had seen this consultant a year ago it would have saved you so much worry. I think I have joked with you about us having so many of the same health blights.May be now you can have some pain relief? My consultant said it was all about balance. Ibuprofen is a big No but moderate amounts of paracetamol is ok, e said its about quality of living. I will be going back on my low carb diet just a few weeks of normal ish after my op.Kept off the real baddies, cakes biscuits chocolate etc. May be worth trying iced coffee? I drink tea and coffee, on the keto diet you can have fresh cream in it. Unsweetened Almond milk in tea. My freezer is overflowing with Keto grub, ready for K day. Its said to reduce or even stop diabetes too so a big plus. I expect your family are well happy too. Autoimmune can be genetic, fatty liver can be reduced even with a cirrhosis diagnosis. Says she who is praying my ARFI scan says I dont have cirrhosis. I wore some loose trousers yesterday, my brother said they looked like clown's pants. You will be the same soon. Need to get on EBay, as I have brand new stuff tat will bury me. Its worth it to get healthier. Hazelx

Just to be clear, for anyone else reading this with AIH. AIH is not caused by a single gene defect and so it cannot be inherited. The risk of a child developing AIH from a parent is very low indeed.

This comes from the leading Consultants in the field of AIH.

Whilst this appears to be a reply to your post Radnor, I couldn't work out how to post just a general response. I just wanted to add this because a lot of people do worry they could pass AIH onto their children. :)

I dont mind being corrected at all, I have other autoimmune conditions that can affect descendants , but can also skip generations. the human body is so complex. It must be a relief for those with AIH.

Hi

So pleased for you Deb, what a relief for you and your family. I've always liked coffee, normally 6 mugs a day!!, Now I barely have 2, just gone off it a little, just my luck now I find it's good for the liver!! Love and hugs Lynne xxxx

Hi Deb,

Glad to hear that you are pleased [?] with the new diagnosis.

I have not heard that moderate coffee is good for the liver -huh.

Why aren't tea and cakes good for losing weight ? !

Best wishes on your weight journey - I'm thinking my doctor on Thurs will be advising me to the same thing LOL.

Best wishes,

Mary
