I wouldn't want to try this without your doctors approval, but they do therapeutic phlebotomies (which are the same as donation) to hemochromatosis patients with advanced liver disease (monitored by a hematologist for safety).
In America, there is also a health questionnaire that must be done at the blood bank before donating, and most any kind of chronic/severe disease would most likely be deferred.
If your iron is elevated, & you can get a referral to a hematologist, he/she may order therapeutic phlebotomy to lower iron. This would be the safest way.
Hello Hayley,
I think there are a number of risk factors to be considered here. Firstly is that the liver passes around 2000 litres of blood and filters it 350 times per day. The liver's main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolises drugs. As it does so, the liver secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines. I'd would think that if your liver is cirrhotic, then this filtering process may not work as efficiently as it should. I personally wouldn't risk infecting anyone, if my blood wasn't filtered as well as it should be.
Also, the cause of your cirrhosis would have to be known and checked in order to rule out any of the hepatitis infections. All this may mean that it just isn't worth doing.
Your wanting to donate blood is lovely and I commend you for it. But I'm sure I read somewhere that if you eat too many "Bounty Bars" you can't give blood. Something to do with the coconut oil. (just kidding).
Ha ha Richard these bounty bars are seriously doing my figure no good especially when dad has just bought me 10.
Thanks for your knowledge on giving blood.
Enjoy rest of your weekend.

Hi bintcliffe,
I would think that your best source of information would be first - your doctor, and second - the agency that you give blood through.
It could be that any medications you take would take you off the list anyway.
Best wishes,
Mary
