I only seem to come and chat to you when I need advice -Sorry !
I need to ask about varices. I have three grade 2 not banded but take Carvedilol daily to reduce risk of bleeding. Today when I woke up I had a little bit of blood on my face. Probably a tiny amount but blood always looks such a lot. In my pre cirrhosis days I wouldn't have given it a second thought but now I am paranoid about every possible symptom. Anyway throughout the day I have managed to convince myself I am going to have major bleed. My throat is sore or maybe I have just imagined that.
My question is to any of you that have had had a serious bleed. Did you have any warning signs like a sore throat or a really small bleed first ? I also have a sore ear but even in my paranoid anxious state, I don't see how that would be relevant.
I know if I really worried, it should be a trip to A and E but its 30 miles away and have no trasport and don't want to waste NHS time on a Friday night.
Have a great weekend everyone.

My husband had no idea he was about to have a massive variceal bleed. He has told me he was seeing blood in his stools for some months leading up to what came (but he'd put it down to rectal tearing having been straining to go to loo). He had fresh red blood in his stool but later black sticky/tarry poo. On the day he actually vomited blood he was restless, couldn't get comfy no matter what he did. Over night he vomited blood twice - it was a mixture of bright red, darker red and the typical 'coffee granule' type appearance. It turned out he had 7 ruptured varices and lead to his diagnosis of cirrhosis.
If in doubt contact NHS out of hours - if they feel it necessary they will arrange hospital treatment.
Thanks Katie, you are always the voice of reason. I am doing really well, LFTs best they have been this month but it's so easy to get paranoid about every twinge or spot that occurs x
Hi there after having three major bleeds In which two I managed to vomit up. my third out the other end. The two that I vomited came from nowhere and didn’t experience any thing differently in the way I felt.
But the one that came out the other end so to speak which had gone through my body came out black and sticky and prior to it and looking back I knew something was wrong as I felt so unwell so quickly and it was the one that made me the most worried and as you’ve mentioned worrying is part and parcel of having varicies
I’d say not to worry but it’s just inevitable that we do. But it’s more important that you don’t panic if one occurs as it’s the shock that can kill as well as the bleeding. I wish you well and try and stay healthy. Paul
I have 2 small varices which have not needed banding like you, but have not had a bleed thank God. I do have nosebleeds though, and sometimes wake up to blood on the pillow, so I was wondering if it could be that?
I have only been given omeprazole for mine, and I have yearly gastroscopies...I've
got on in mid December. I know nosebleeds can be yet another problem cirrhosis brings, and also low platelet count....so when I get a nosebleed, or any other bleed, it takes ages to clot.
That is a very possible explanation David. It was only a very small amount of blood and bright red so fresh I would say. I dont get nosebleeds now but had a couple when I was drinking. Anway its not happened again today so hopefully it was nothing to be concerned about. Blood scares me silly. I am a bit like Doc Martin that way lol
Please do not worry I have been bleeding excessively from my mouth every night and morning since October 2017. I’ve had every test under the sun to work out why but no one has an answer and they have not attributed it to anything significant. All the medics I’ve seen have now given up bothering and leave me with it along with the Cirrhosis, Nash, Diabetes, and loads of other stuff. I just have to cope with that and every other symptom alone. Nobody is really interested anymore. I’ve been ill for so long so I never talk about me now. If I ask them how they are doing, it is me who is the listener!!! For the next hour or so. It helps them and stops me dwelling on my, frankly, unimportant life.
Massive bleed recently. Horrific. Vomited a third of my blood. Hence severe anaemia. Not really much warning. Felt a bit icky and took to my bed. Then started to throw up. Seen really quickly at A&E. Amazing care. Stage 1 varices. But the bleed not linked to varices, just historical abuse of my body.
Don’t have nose bleeds as such but sometimes blood when I blow my nose.
