Must get out!

I have had diarrhea for a couple of weeks and my doc has put me in the queue for lower bowel examination. Had an endoscopy in December and I now take Lansoprazole for the nausea. Some of the side effects of this drug is nausea, vomiting and diarrhea!! My main question is, how do I manage out for my shopping etc? I cant become house bound just because I get a sudden call to the bathroom. I am eating a bland diet. PS Sorry for wrong spelling.

Are you actually suffering these side effects?

I am on lactulose, a laxative that's used in liver disease to stop excess ammonia building up in the bowels.

Similar to you I can never be too far away from a toilet because of its unpredictable effects!

Also like you I just cannot stay in for too long, it drives me crazy!

It's not ideal but I actually have to plan when I'm going out and avoid the lactulose the day before. This can cause me to become mildly confused due to the ammonia buildup, but at least I can get out for the day.

If you are taking the lansoprazole to treat nausea but it is also causing you nausea as a side effect than I would talk to the doctor about the need to keep taking it. If its not doing you any benifit than it seems pointless to continue it and risk the other side effects it can cause which you also seem to be experiencing .

This can be a terrible problem and not at all funny. After my liver transplant, I find that I too have the same problem, I suspect in my case it's down to the med's I take as the situation becomes more prominent about two hours after taking my medication. It can happen at the most awkward of times, and with little warning. Most stores I've found can be so unsympathetic, "No, our toilets are for staff only". They then harp on about not being insured for members of the public to use their toilets, while you stand there preying that your cheeks stay closed long enough.

I now use the disabled toilets as not all disabilities are visible. I've also got a "Just Can't wait" card. Your can order one from: bladderandbowel.org/help-in...

The other thing I have is a A RADAR Key. These you can get on Amazon and enable you to use the pay toilets in most town centre's. I've never had to use mine though. You can find more details on these keys here: crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/get...

I hope this helps.

Great advice thank you Richard.

Hi lynbrown

Have you considered seeing your GP and letting them know some of the side effects of the current medication? They may be able to start you on an alternative one?

If you are going to have a colonoscopy (large bowel examination), the hospital will also probably be sending you bowel preparation to clear your bowel out prior to the procedure. If they are sending you for a flexible sigmoidoscopy ( a limited large bowel test) they may send you out laxative tablets or an enema.

It is important to also discuss that with your doctors and if you cannot manage taking the preparation at home, sometimes they can admit you into hospital to take it there and be monitored.

Your GP is there to discuss all these issues with, so hopefully you can get an appointment to talk them over.

Best wishes
