Still in the dark

So as you may be able to read in my initial posts , I was diagnosed with an enlarged fatty liver . It took me forever to finally see a specialist thanks to covid and when I did it seems as though he is not taking my concerns seriously . I was able to get an upper endoscopy done which came back normal as well as a hida scan for my gallbladder , also normal. Since losing 60 lbs (240 down to 180) the pain has subsided but I do feel discomfort or dull pain in the RUQ area after meals and some random moments of the day . Should I feel content with these findings that I do not have some kind of advanced liver disease . My Hepatologist is insisting I don’t have any cirrhosis but how could he know without running what I look at as necessary tests, ie fibroscan and liver biopsy . I’m worried I’m not being taken seriously because my insurance doesn’t cover me for everything that I could be doing right now . Smh this is America . Any advice would help . Thanks

Good afternoon 99problem,

As you suggest, perhaps some form of fibrosis monitoring would be useful, particularly if diagnosed with fatty liver.

I have included a link to Non Alcohol Related Fatty LIver Disease ( NAFLD) and Liver Disease Tests Explained which describes fibrosis monitoring in more depth.

Hello, how are you doing now?

Did you get anymore testing done? I’m about the same as you with horrible RUQ pain that takes over the entire right side of my body. Ct picked up fatty enlarged liver (mine 20.9cm) however radiologist and drs tell me it’s a Riedel’s lobe which I say bull shit. Anyway I had to go to another gastroenterologist and pester and pester and pester And I finally got labs for a fibrosure test which also came back normal but I don’t feel normal in anyway. Once again I pestered the office and finally got an appointment for a fibroscan in October. I’m very anxious and depressed as I’m 90% my liver will be very stiff as I can already feel it’s largeness and stiffness in my body. No dr will take you take you seriously if your literally not dying in front of them but if you are worried or believe it’s something more than they tell you then I urge you to keep digging.

Honestly after steady diet and exercise my RUQ pain has subsided , however it may come back depending on my food intake. I’ve come to terms with the fact that most of these doctors don’t care enough to get to the bottom of the diagnosis. I hate to say this but I’ve given up on doctors . I’ve taken my recovery into my own hands . My best advice is to eat right and exercise five days a week if possible. I’m sorry for what you’re going through but with the right actions you can make this situation somewhat better for yourself . I agree that docs don’t care unless things are bleak . So do your best so that it doesn’t get to that point . Let food be thy medicine and keep coming back to this forum to clear your mind . Best of luck with your endeavours.

PS the fibrosis blood test cabs back normal and as a result my doc did not feel it was necessary to move forward with additional testing like a fibroscan. I know this is total BS but I’m tired of fighting .

Yea i understand being tired of fighting, I get there too. Sadly for me since dieting and exercise I feel better sometimes it my labs are starting to get worse still not out of range enough to look into but enough to worry me as I’m sure in the next few months my blood count will be under the normal limits. I’m dying g to hold on a just keep on going but it just sucks. Why become a dr of you can’t see the pattern happening on paper and listen to patients telling you exactly what’s going on? I’m sure drs get tired from all the ppl they see but it’s so sad to know how little they care in the long run.

Thank you for your reply and I’m glad to hear you’ve made some good improvement :)

Thanks 🙏. How long have you been on your diet and health regiment ? It takes awhile before you see a stitch of results with the liver, but it is possible . There are even some people with cirrhosis that live full and happy lives through a healthy lifestyle. I’m not saying to give up on yourself at all and I know these doctors are educated and well meaning but I think it’s the system they work out of. At least it is here in the states . I empathize with you and hope you get some relief . I don’t know your everyday life but if you stick to it you can see some change . I try to take a stoic approach to these things and try not to let physical discomfort or pain affect my mind state. Easier said than done at times but it serves a disciplinary purpose .

I’m definitely not giving up. I’m doing all I can to eat and live better. It’s exhausting as I loved food but now everything seems to be my worst enemy if I want to live, according to ppl who are living with cirrhosis. I’ve had symptoms for almost 3 years now so I’m 90% positive my fibroscan will confirm my fears. Unfortunately I’m very hard on myself and until I get answers I can’t sleep, especially since I can’t take anything to help with sleep or anxiety due to the liver problems. I’ve been doing so much for 4 months now and nothing gets better. I’m not back to work and my pains have become so much worse. I try to work out when I can but I feel like I end up hurting myself when I try to so diet is all I have. At least I’ve been able to get an appointment with loma Linda Hepatology but sadly the drs only appointment is three days before my fibroscan so I’ll probably end up going in there continuing to look like a crazy person without my scan to back up my symptoms. My worst symptoms are the URQ pain and itching all over. Now the pain is in my right shoulder and arm and I still feel like my liver is going to hurt out of my side like in alien 😣

In totally relate with you . I was “diagnosed “ with my fatty enlarged liver in February and have been working on my new lifestyle since then . Although everyone is different I can tell you without a doubt that I did not feel any different at the four month mark so stay the course . You’ll get there . I know that the symptoms are so present , painful and annoying But try not to assume the worst. Every body and every liver is different . Your story sounds so familiar as I am JUST being able to calm down about it in my head and it’s been 7 months . Listen working out does not have to be strenuous. Walking for a half hour a day does wonders for your body and mind . Nature is great for the anxiety that not only comes along with the constant doctors visits but the Fear of the unknown. So you are aware , your liver lives in a capsule that has nerve endings and when you eat your liver enlarges and stretches that capsule . That is the pain you feel In the right quadrant and in your back .

It’s funny how no Dr will tell you about capsule pain but in my research I’ve been able to understand it. I finally got back to work so I haven’t been able to go for walks much but I told myself I’d do a mile walk or jog every night when I get home just to keep things going. I was so scared for a while because I lost 15lbs in two months but I do believe that was from me cutting out fast food and beer as since I’ve gotten in a better eating routine my weight has stabilized and I don’t seem to be loosing my muscle mass. Now I’m just scared that since my drs didn’t believe me that it’s my liver they put me through thyroid radiation to kill my hyperthyroidism that I wasn’t taking meds for because it wasn’t that bad but now that I’ll go hypo I’ll have to be in hormone replacements for the rest of my life which can damage my liver. I as soon desperate to believe and trust them and I feel like that’s gonna bite my ass in the long run now.

The good news is I’ll be seeing a specialist next week that might give me a fibroscan that day. It’s good news to get it but I know my anxiety will kill me that whole day until I get the results
