Hello canard,

Many complementary and alternative medicines are available that are suggested to ease the symptoms of liver disease. Most of these are processed by the liver, so can be toxic to people with liver problems. Some can damage the liver and make you more severely ill. At present, healthcare professionals are not clear on the role and place of some therapies in managing liver disease. More research needs to be done on the use of such therapies.

You may get various opinions regarding your question.

However, the following is a link which will inform you of the position of the British Liver Trust.

Hi there - I used to take it but i don't anymore as it affects my medication however my Dad takes it he took a very concentrated dose in tablet form (he has no liver issues and drinks in moderation) and his bilirubin levels went sky high! He wasn't jaundiced but his skin appeared very tanned - the GP said it was the milk thistle the dose was too high, he reduced it and the tan and his bilirubin levels went right down.

Hi Canard,

I think Richard's post sums up the use of milk thistle pretty well.
