hi, I was diagnosed with cirrhosis in 2015, ive had a few hospital visits, with the usual things, stomach drains, high ammonia levels, etc. Last w/end I was taken in for high ammonia, and discharged on m/day. It seems to me that my gp thinks the hospital will take care of me, so he sends me there. At the hospital, they will only take me in for things they can fix, ie stomach drains, high ammonia levels. What they don't do is to take me in to build me up, vitamins and fluids are a must for people like us, so a couple of days in hospital to do this is a must. Instead they only treat you for what you came in with and send you home , hoping your gp will do the rest, which they don't. And in the middle is me, feeling very unwell with no help from anyone. Why cant I have help from the district nurse who could come in a couple times a week and get help when I need it
cant get help: hi, I was diagnosed with... - British Liver Trust
cant get help
Do you know which vitamins and fluids you need ? If not why not find out from your GP. You could probably get what you need either on prescription or over the counter at the chemist. Hospitals are bursting at the seams and staff working around the clock so I think it likely they don't feel you need to be in hospital when between you and your GP you can easily get what you require.
when I was in hospital once the doctor said he will keep me in for a few days, I had 2 lots of albumin, 2lots of vitamins, and they were done via a drip in my arm, the doc said it is better than tablets because my liver wouldn't be able deal them, so they wouldn't do me any good
The hospital will only treat your immediate symptoms you go in for, a consultant has to arrange any other treatments you need, are you under a consultant?
yes I am, but he is as much use as a chocolate fire guard, I haven't seen him other my 6 monthly visits to clinic, I normally see his nu 2, but he has to run any treatment past his boss, so I don't get it.
You need to demand to see your main consultant sometimes we just have to put our foot down to get what we want I know it feels embarrassing to do but if we're unhappy with the treatment we our the only ones who can change it x. Or see if you can be referred to another hospital if it's possible
I have emailed to ask for a referral to st james hospital in leeds England, he has told me in the past that I wont be accepted for assessment, he said I would have to be much worse, well a doctor that I emailed at st james emailed me back and said he would see me, and to get a referral from my consultant, so I am waiting to see what he says
I am under Leeds and they are fantastic I really hope you get an appointment but I am sure you will x
oh mate I really needed to hear that, I am at my wits end with my consultant, it feels like he has decided that he wont do anything to help me. At the moment I am ill all the time, I have no appetite at all and live on ensure vitamin drinks, I hear my stomach rumble with wind, but I still don't want to eat, I sleep most of the day, and only come round a bit at night. My wife has early alzheimers, she can feed herself, but gets very confused, and wont leave my side, which is very wearing when I need to sleep. I have to be honest I have thought about killing myself and her with morphine that you can by online, at the moment I see that is the only way out of this situation.
You can get help you know .. my husband has a brain injury and we needed additional help as he wasn't picking up my h.e like my friends and family did when I was admitted to my local hospital I was classes as a vulnerable adult and social services then intervened as I was his carer before I become poorly... Maybe you could talk to your GP about getting a carer in to support your wife so you could sleep and they can also help with cooking, cleaning and personal care I know I struggled to get in and out of the bath so hubby had to help me ... It's worth a try this ask x .... You definitely need some help especially if you're wife is poorly too ...
I hope Leeds contact you soon with an appointment and get that ball rolling x
