GGT ten times normal certainly should get his attention. This is not the kind of thing you want to ignore!

I drank quite heavily for many years, and never popped a GGT much more than 150. If he's a heavy drinker, it's probably high time to address this.

If alcohol isn't the cause, he really needs to devote what ever time and energy it takes to get to the bottom of this. An abdominal ultrasound is certainly warranted, along with kitchen sink labs. Make sure they check ferritin & transferrin saturation to rule out hemochromatosis. Diabetes, gallbladder issues and auto-immune issues should also be addressed.

Keep pestering those doctors until you get a proper answer and a plan to resolve this issue!

He's been trying to get help with a detox program for 18 months he was turned down again yesterday, he had a fibroscan scan last May with result of 14.6 begged for help then, still struggling it's complex because he has PTSD x

Sorry he can't get into detox. He might try getting by with less while you work on getting a slot. I tapered off alcohol by switching to a weak 4% beer and pushing the start time for my evening drinking back later & later. It took over a month, but I eventually got to a point where I could make the jump to freedom without withdrawal symptoms.

If he could work on reducing his consumption by 50% while he waits for detox, he'll have an easier time in detox. He'll need lower doses of recovery meds and they will work better. Less chance of becoming dependent on them.

Hope you get a break soon.

Thanks he's trying to taper down, but depression and anxiety don't help the day to day battle x

Don’t worry too much. Mine have jiggled back and forth within the 1000 and 2000 range for 16 years since I had a biopsy and was diagnosed with NASH. Just get advice from a Consultant. My experience with GPs is they have no real understanding of this particular issue. Your overall situation is the key to understanding what is going on and whether the Consultant can and will help you. Take someone to see that specialist to pick up on things you forget or get them to write down notes for you. Make sure you go to see them as well with a list of your relevant burning questions. Your health is not something to treat lightly. Liver experts deal with things differently. If they fob you off and don’t explain things fully, ensure the person you take along has the strength and capacity to ask things on your behalf. I took my husband along, who I love dearly, but he never said one single word to be proactive on my behalf. Now I take along a strong minded, inquiring friend who won’t be ignored or intimidated. Good luck.

No shame in going slow with a taper detox, so long as you don't have any back-slide binges. Simply switching to a lower alcohol content beverage (light beer) can help. Baby steps are still steps in the right direction. Keep taking them, & shoot for a 50% reduction in a months time. Inflammation will be reduced and new beginnings may appear on the horizon.
