Hi Tink14. Unfortunately, I think once your dad starts having drains he will have to have them more regularly. My husband used to have them before his liver transplant and although he too was on spironolactone & furosemide, eventually this medication was affecting his kidneys, so he had to stop taking them. He was having to have ascitic drains every 10 days and they would drain between 9 and 13 litres of fluid off each time.

Is your dad on the liver transplant list? I think until he has a liver transplant the ascites will continue, but consult your dad's gastroenterologist.

Wishing your dad a healthier future.

Hi tink14. I have acities also i go every couple if weeks for a drain, due to past health history i am unable to have a transplant. I had tests and am seeing the radiologist this week to see if i can have the Tips done. I take spironolactone twice daily but couldn't be given any more because if kidneys thats when the drain started. Has this been discussed with your dad at all.

Thank you 53pm63 they don't tell us much at all hence why I have tried to educate myself and they certainly don't like me questioning them but that won't stop as he is my dad.

I honestly don't know why he was offered it but doc also said it could make him worse, then on next visit I questioned him over cancer he was not pleased I also mentioned tips to which he said no he definitely can not have it as he was to poorly hence to poorly meaning yes he had HE but that went I'm clutching at straws just now but I will keep pushing for what dad is entitled to

We have been told by a nurse on the ward my dad is around a C (severe) I'm guessing,he has portal hypertension, diabetes type 2 Asities varieties,no jaundice no bleeds, can't have a transplant because of his age & diabetes, told 16/18 months ago nodules were cancer put on palliative care. Latest scan which dad had to ask for came back none suspicious, but still tell him he has cancer, been quite well compared to some people few H E episodes been having drains every few months, just been in with cellulitis & had a drain while there, nurse told home she is 95% certain no cancer A&E have said this twice too, but his consultant says he has? After offering him Tipps then getting results of his last scan to which I questioned and he did not like, he refused for dad to have Tipps & no more scans again nothing they can do & nurse said radiologist notes say they will keep eye on future scans with nodules I'm baffled once again I'm getting a second opinion as I can't sit back & not try
