Hello everyone, My husband has started to get very breathless is this a symptom of his liver cirrhosis? Abdomen starting to swell as well could ascites be the reason for both symtoms. I am extremely worried.

Hi

I'm not sure about the being breathless but a swollen abdomen could be a sign of ascites, please make an appointment at his dr's. Pm me if you need to. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx

Hi Feline14,

Horribly worrying for you as a carer... My thoughts are don't wait for too many more comments from lovely forum members and call your Dr or 111 at the very least (not sure if you're in UK)

Previously your husband has had ascites I've just seen, so yep could well be that but always wise to investigate sudden onset of symptoms like these. Bottom line - with his history it's not worth delaying, if only for peace of mind and of course relief for him.

Do keep us posted and always check in if only for support and friendship. Always someone here for you.

Chris is right Feline, it's urgent you call for help, so l hope you have.

The breathlessness may be due to ascites putting pressure on the lungs, which also means a strain on the kidneys, etc. Best of luck to both of you. x 🙏

Hi feline

I think the others have said it all, doctors or 111 or both. Now I would suggest...?

Good luck to you both.

Hi Feline.

I am not a doctor or medically trained in any way but your husband needs to see someone who is soon. I had cirrhosis, ascites and was getting short of breath too, It turned out to be a pulmonary efusion which required draining of 6 litres of fluid, then repeated a week later because it had filled up again. This may not be the case but it shouldn't ruled out I hope this is of some help.

Sorry that was meant to be pleural efusion.

If he is struggling with breathlessness i would go to a&e.

Fluid from the ascities can travel through blood vessels & end up in the lungs or it could be that the liver is enlarged that it is pushing up into the lung

My hubby ended up in hospital with pneumonia because both things had happened

It is worth getting checked out quickly to rule things out

Hi bje

I think your post may be lost here 😕 Can you start a new thread - you may get replies 🤞 then. Do you know how to do that?

From my point of view I can’t help, sorry, my cirrhosis was believed to be alcohol related.

Unfortunately I don't know how to start a new thread. Suggestions?

Hi bjw (got it right this time - sorry for before)

Yes:-

Go to home ( click the 🏠 button - the most left icon on the Menu bar at the top of the HealthUnlocked page)

Look at the nearly top right and it says “What's your Question?” . Click on that.

Fill in the two tabs there - one is called Title and the other is called something like Question - oops I forget - as usual - 🙁 - but it’s obvious 😀.

Then click the button “Post”

If you are really keen you can Add a Photo before clicking Post button. But probably not needed for your Post....

Good luck. I’ll be watching out for it 😀😀😀👍

Hi Bjw

Have you tried eating little and often, your system would maybe cope better with this. Also I would try to push your appointment forward and get some dietary information for your particular condition if you don't already have some.

As miles has said, if you start your own thread on the subject you will probably get more response.

Regards.

Alf.

Good afternoon feline14,

As our other lovely forum members have suggested, it is importnt to seek medical help with any new symptom, particularly if it is acute.

I have attached the link to cirrhosis for information.

Before I had my transplant I had to have my ascites drained every 2 - 3 weeks.. I didn't mind having it done. It didn't hurt and you feel so much better afterwards...also I got to know the nurses and could have a laugh with them. I am still in touch with one.
