My routine bloods have all come back normal apart from Alt 49. the doctor says this is to high it should be below 29.I am confused as other sites say the upper limit is 56. I am very worried I might have liver disease. My bilirubin was 8. albumin 4.9 and platelets 408

Hi Northcote. May i ask what do you have 'routine' bloods done for routinely.
Sometimes, for certain of the tests, hospitals seem to use different 'units', but I have only ever seen ALT measured in: iu/L .. However, I do know - from having bloods done by different labs and hospitals - that different areas can have slightly different ranges: eg the lab that my GP practice uses has a slightly different range for some of the liver function tests, than the hospital where my new consultant is.
My results say: 10-36 iu/L is the acceptable range for ALT. So, your reading seems high compared to that, but your Doc saying it should be below 29 seems too low. I would talk to the BLT [link to their site at the top of this page], or maybe others will come back to you. ALT levels rise when liver cells are damaged, so I guess it's understandable that your Doc is concerned.
Hope you get some answers.
Mine went to over 500 at its worst. Mine initially wnt to 56 and I was told it was raised a bit but they left me three months and re did it as it can alter like your blood pressure during the day.you may find they just keep an eye on it to see what happens over next few months. If in he mean time you felt worse just o back and tell them I found I generally felt un well and really tired and eventually mine did go into liver disease but it was hrt that caused mine. All the best Angela.
