Hello I am a 56 year old woman and I have been told that I have a decompensated liver and am going for an assessment at King's next week. I have drunk alcohol in the past but none in the last 6 months since I have been diagnosed. As you can imagine I am in a bit of a whirlwind and not sure what to expect . Can anyone guide me through

hi ejnurthen , sorry to hear of your diagnosis. There are some posters on here who do have the unwanted experience of having transplants etc, they should be commenting soon.

One of the most important factors is the actual cause of the cirrhosis, have they found a cause? If you can remove the cause the Liver can recover quite well sometimes. The fact they are sending you for an assessment does indicate and advanced situation im afraid. Some peoples transplants go well and they never look back, some end up having a 2nd transplant because of complications etc.

Hi ejnurthen, my husband went through the assessment for transplant in June 2014 and at that time I put a big thread on here about what the week entailed, the various tests, discussions etc. Hubbies assessment was at Edinburgh but in general the same sort of tests are carried out at all the centres just perhaps in a different order. Hubby got listed but after 10 months his blood test results improved so that he doesn't currently meet the criteria for transplant.

If you click on my name at the top of this reply it should take you to all of my previous posts - the one title Transplant Assessment will give you a lot of inside knowledge of what goes on during the transplant assessment week.

Wishing you all the very best,

Katie

You'll probably pick up a positive note through that in that we at the time perhaps had rose tinted glasses about transplant and hoped it would be the miracle that would give hubby his life back. Since then due to hearing the other side of the coin we are now much more realistic, transplant is a treatment option only when all avenues have been explored, it is a procedure to save your life and there are no guarantees with it. Still if you need it then hopefully all goes well for you. xx
