ALT ON THE RISE

I quit drinking totally 18 months ago my ALT was then 78, after a few more months it dropped to within the normal range at 46.

I had my gall bladder removed due to RUQ pain in dec13, and was diagnosed with a duplex right kidney last month. bloods taken last week show my ALT is now 57.... What could be possible cause of the rise?

Thankyou.

My alt s keep going up and down and they are not really sure why,I was put on a low fat diet which seemed to help, and I am over weight by about 2 stone which the liver dr said could be making my levels go up .have you been referred to a liver dr ?

I've lost almost 3st sine I stopped drinking so it's coming off,I am still over 2st overweight though. Yes i've been referred due to the discomfort, I never eat oily foods just gone totally off them. Craving sugar and salt so in with the bloods taken (5 lots!) are tests for sugars and thyroid.

Thanks for the reply katpau, are you having any pain?

ALT numbers can go up and down all the time. 57 is only 7 above the normal range according to my lab results, so I would keep a copy of your last week results and see how they compare the next time you have bloodwork. At this stage the possible reasons could be so many (perhaps you took a painkiller, or had exercised just before the test or were fighting a mild virus, etc etc) a doctor would take little interest in a level of 57 if your other LFT results were all normal

Thank you bolly, they did more bloods on mon ALT now 53 and are referring me to a specialist... is there something they're not telling me?

From your other posts it sounds like there are other issues apart from one elevated liver enzyme, so probably better to have a specialist check you out than a GP

Eep... Is there any reason that any info would be held back, is that normal?

Is information being held back? your other posts on here suggest you have other health issues, i.e kidney issues, gallbladder issues, etc, not just an elevated ALT, is that right? Its possible that because of your other health issues your GP thinks you will benefit from an appointment with a specialist, but I'm just guessing here.

My gall bladder was removed so that can't be causing it, I was told the duplex kidney will not impair liver function so I can only assume those two are not an issue.

I was taking omeprazole as post op I had some trapped wind/ refux problems on waking and I took the recommended levels of ibuprofen and paracetomols most days for the discomfort.

I've now stopped taking anything and it's actually made me feel better strangely, let's hope my liver is behaving when I see the specialist :) Thankyou for your advice Bolly.
