"Bronze diabetes", with which you get a somewhat tanned appearance, is one of the symptoms of a genetic blood disorder called Haemochromatosis, which causes the body to store iron. Among its (many) consequences is cirrhosis which can cause GI bleeds. It may be that this was investigated but it would be worth asking what your ferritin levels were in any blood tests they did. A level over 300 would be a cause for further observation.
I was diagnosed with this and it did provide an explanation for my permatan (something put down loafing by a pool). After treatment, it did fade.
