My boyfriends ex-wife and her partner have played netball quite seriously for a number of years and were quite fit but their club did not have a veterans team (for the 40+) and sadly gave up. They were finding playing with, and against girls half their age and 3 feet taller was showing their age.
We had spoken to them about about the C25K so they had decided to give it a go. They went through the course each week but found it a lot easier that I did. Since finishing they have taken a different approach to us. We just increased the distance each week, they have decided to do a walk-run-walk system which fits in well with their hiking pastime.
They don't have a fixed pattern, they just run until either they get tired, or something interesting catches their eye. It sounds quite good and they have worked out they do about 20 minutes running per hour over the day (including their lunch). They have just got back from a week away and were telling us about it
We do something similar when we take the dogs with us. Our walk periods are when one of the dogs decides whatever he is sniffing is more interesting than us and we have to stop and call him. We have booked a week away in September and taking the dogs so that sounded a good plan to try.
While they were away, we were sent numerous photos of landscapes, strange flowers and one of them sitting on a fence admiring the view. there were a couple of shots that looked like they had their fingers over the lens when they took the photo. I supposes everyone manages to do that at some point.
During our conversation with them yesterday they told us that it was a great holiday other than a slight mishap. The rather posh hotel they stayed at constantly topped up their coffee during breakfast and they ended up drinking a lot more that they realised. Out on their hack, miles from anywhere, the coffee needed to come out. Each took it in turn to stand guard while the other climbed down into a ditch to let the coffee out. My partners ex-wife went first, incident free. When it was her partners turn there was a loud scream that something had bitten or stung her. It was right at the top of the inside of her leg. Unable to see it for herself, her partner took a photo of it so she could see the marks left.
It took a few seconds, but both my boyfriend and I must have realised at the same time that those photos of fingers were probably not fingers. We both looked at each other trying not to give the game away. We did a really good job but his ex must have twigged. Just as they were leaving, she whispered to me "I didn't delete that photo before sending them did I?". I let he know we thought it was just a finger over the lens so deleted then ourselves. She is going pick her moment when to break the news to her partner. She thinks she will see the funny side of it but our next face-to-face meeting may have some red faces.
I do find that I can go walking for hours without needing to go, but whenever I go running, 5 minutes into the run, I always think I should have had one more visit before leaving. The feeling usually passes (and I don't mean down my leg!) so that's the only thing that is currently putting off giving the walk-run-walk thing a go if we are going to be our for hours.
