Does anyone have any experience of this? Apparently it is normally a problem for people who sit at work all day - that’s not me (retired and active)
It seems to have been brought on by my latest return to running (and yes, I returned gently by repeating c25k yet again)
I took 6 weeks off, got much better, went out for two short runs in a week, and back it came. I can walk, do exercise classes, play table tennis, but not run!
Am I best advised to give up and get all my exercise in other ways? Or does anyone know of anything I can do about it?

How miserable for you-sending loads of sympathy your way. You can do everything “right” and still end up unlucky like you have. Have you seen a professional yet? They’re absolutely the best person to advise you. When I had troubles, a physio who often works with runners was amazing in getting me back on my feet. Hopefully you can find someone similar to support you in dealing with this setback.
Even if we don’t have anyone who has been through exactly the same, most of us will have had some time on the injury couch and know what that feels like. Any time you want to come for a good old cathartic moan, you’re always welcome to let off some steam with people who get it.
Thank you both for your replies. It was a physio who told me what the problem is - I took the opportunity to ask about it when I was escorting my mother to see him about her problems.
He is not a sports physio though, and didn’t attempt to advise me about running other than to give it a rest. He did say I should avoid sitting without a soft cushion as far as possible - and he was right - it is worse last night and again this evening after travelling by train for some hours yesterday - but has been no problem while walking over 19,000 steps today.
I’m going to have to find someone with more running related knowledge to help me decide what to do about it. If running keeps making it worse there’s no point in doing it, but it’s a shame as I enjoy a couple of runs a week in the countryside 🤔
I haven't experienced this either but I echo everyone who advises seeing a physio and/or GP.
Last summer I had a miserable 4-5 months with a new and very painful ache. I was travelling so couldn't get to a doctor. I got an appointment when I was finally home, he diagnosed an IT band issue, showed me one, yes one, exercise and said to use ibuprofen gel at night. Within a couple of days the pain was gone.
You need an expert to have a look at you, make a proper diagnosis and give you the right treatment. Please, don't just suffer, guess or rely on well meaning strangers on the internet like me. There is expert help available, your GP may even have their own physio for you to see. Leaving your problems untreated might make things worse, but I don't know because I'm not a doctor.
Thank you! I did get the diagnosis from a physo, but you are right, I need an expert to help sort it out.
The daft thing is I can walk all day without a problem (29000 steps yesterday - must be mad!) but it hurts when I run. Running also aggravates the pain it causes when I sit.
