When your run becomes a swim…

Today’s run was supposed to be 30 minute finish lines with Coach B but I wasn’t really up for him today. I almost didn’t run but I realised that was ridiculous and I could just do thirty minutes on my own. Maybe I’ll come back to it once the plan has finished. It was time for a normal, every day, run.

Getting out of the house was tricky. I got halfway down the road on my warm up walk and realised my podcast hadn’t downloaded. I walked back to the house and stood outside the wifi router until that was sorted.

I got halfway down the road (again) and realised my hands were freezing. There was a big internal wrangle about going back (again!) but I ended up decided it would be miserable if my fingers didn’t warm up.

I got halfway down the road (again again) and finally had everything I needed…except a tissue but I didn’t realise that until much later! There’s always something. I hadn’t actually decided where to go so headed for the village with the intention of walking up a hill and on to a nice route I hadn’t done in a while.

Halfway up the hill, a cyclist warned me it was totally flooded at the bottom and cars couldn’t get through. That would mean totally soaked feet and ankles right at the start of the run. Instead, I walked back down the hill and started walking up the next one where there would be no flood. After a couple of minutes, I decided to start running instead of walking. The hill’s very steep but I got into a really nice rhythm. I was right that there was no flood. Instead, I find myself basically running up a river. Within minutes my feet were just as wet as if I’d run through a flood but I was really enjoying myself. Like a kid running through puddles or one of those city centre fountains. I often do hill repeats up this hill and it felt lovely to be doing it at a comfortable pace for a change!

On the way down the hill, I was dodging puddles, dog walkers and a lady on a horse who I see a lot. I had a nice conversation with her about how someone needs to invent running wellies! I think she’d clocked the state of my leggings!

I finished along the lane I almost always come back by. A couple of horses seemed to wish me well! Just over 4km done, a happy Garmin (a rare two run in a row streak!) and a very happy me!

Anyone else a total faffer trying to start their runs?!! It would cheer me up to know I’m not alone in this!

I’m glad it’s not just me!! Getting going really shouldn’t be as difficult as it is!!!

oh I have been there, with the faffing!

Tissues! Yup! Gloves, yup! Podcast, oh yeah!

But it sounds like you had a much wetter run than me! Glad you enjoyed it! I was happy with just some rainy songs!

Well done!

Thank you! It’s been really wet here lately and the ground is saturated so every time it rains it gets more like a swimming pool underfoot! It was nice that it wasn’t actually raining though!

Fantastic perseverance 👏

I used to faff but don’t have your stick-at-it mindset so once back home, I just stayed there. For that reason, these days I try to be super organised and although I lose all spontaneity and checklists are irritating, not nearly as much as forgetting things and re-starting (or not !).

I managed to dodge the wettest of the day for my scheduled “easy 4K” but boy was it breezy and no matter what direction I went, it seemed to be right in my face … how does that work on a circular route 🤔

😂 I love this!! I’m exactly the same-I hate feeling constrained to having to go at a certain time and ticking off what to take but I also hate forgetting stuff!! I’m glad I’m not alone!!

I think the fact I needed to wash my hair run or not and I had been through the effort of putting my sports bra on made me keep going!!

Putting on a sports bra should be listed as a workout on its own 😉

Will she, won't she???

I have done that return walk so many times... I wonder why sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't! The glove forgetting too !

I usually have all my gear together, but occasionally take my running gloves out of the jacket for some other use!

BUT... you got out... you walked, you ran. you chatted and exchanged gossip with a couple of horses and an owner, and you almost SWAM.!

Plus...HILLS and ...4K done... !

That was one heck of an outing!!! GO YOU !! xxx

Thank you!! I’m glad it’s not just me. That’s one of the nicest thing about this board-so many people to remind us that we’re normal in all our struggles!! Keeping glove in the run jacket is such a good plan … I’m nicking that idea!

The hardest part of most runs really is getting out of the door!!!

it was surprisingly cold out there yesterday. I don’t normally run with gloves but should have done so yesterday. It was windy too 🥶

I got drenched and thoroughly muddy, my phone got a whiff of damp and packed up, taking my earphones with it, so the walk home was in blissful silence 😍

I’d had a huge search beforehand trying to find my door key. Turning everything upside down to find the darned thing 🤬. I rang my husband in the end as I suspected he had it. He didn’t answer the phone but turned up shamefaced just as I was leaving 😤

Oh no! That sounds like a case of needing a chilled out run to recover from the run!!!

The weather is so tricky at the moment. I’m never dressed quite right!

oh I know! I was really annoyed that my plans were being thwarted 😁

We can only dress for the weather and hope it’s enough - or not too much 🤷‍♀️😁. At least if it’s too much we can shed some of it

I was pleased with my sock and shoe combo yesterday. My winterised Nikes were really good. While I’m doing most of my running on the flooded washlands I’m rotating between weatherised Nike Pegasus and Puma velocity. Weather resistant road shoes but I mostly run trails in them, not being a fan of road running. Both were sale bargains.
