So many of you have been praising the NRC Cold Weather Run that I decided to see what all the fuss is about
The weather forecast was 3C, light wind, feels like -1C but when I had a look outside the sun was shining and there was even some warmth in it. Thought about wearing an M&S thermal instead of my short sleeved t shirt but decided it didn't feel cold enough. Hat, buff, gloves, jumper, warm tights and socks and I was ready.
Husband and son were running today but as usual they wanted a short, quick run. The idea of a 45 minute guided run was very appealing. At my usual pace this would mean I'd cover just over 5k, which would bring the total I've run this month up to 50km, more than I've managed for a long time.
The path was very muddy and slippery as I set off. It wouldn't have been sensible to try and run at any speed so I plodded along, looking where I was going, taking it very easy. I glanced at my pace and told myself it didn't matter. What was important was to be outside, moving safely. Coach Bennett seemed to be saying the same thing.
The guided run was very informative, especially about adjusting your route so that the wind is at your back on the way home. The forecast said the wind would be from the north, so as my route is roughly west-east-west it should have been at my side. I couldn't feel any breeze at all as I neared the halfway point, then I turned and it hit me. Straight into a headwind, must have been a westerly not a northerly. I'd been going a bit faster but slowed down again.
It was a very easy run, I didn't even attempt any speed. My heartrate barely reached the maximum zone. I was following the advice and slowing down. Thoroughly recommend this run.
Coach B finished his talk and I carried on, covering 6km. This has brought my total distance covered for the month to 51.24km. I'm quite pleased with that.
I got home and my son cooked breakfast for us. As we ate I told them I'd done 6k. Husband reckons they did 6k too...between them
