30 minute Head Starts

I wanted to run today and after several hours being awake in the night slept late, pottered a bit then got ready. It's a lovely sunny day. 30 minutes was my choice as I have lawns to cut and weeds to dig later so off I went. If anybody asked, I'd say I've definitely run this run before but I hadn't so it was fresh and new.

Shorts and tee shirt, suntan cream on, I've decided to remember that this year, last year I had the brownest shoulders ever and bright white tee shirt lines. I'm loving trotting down the road, out the end, past various turnings, music and chatter in my ears. Decide to turn north along the main road, slightly uphill but not much. Turned right again and ran round quieter roads, not many people about, one runner, two women chatting and the postman were all I saw, a nod, a smile and cheery hello's were exchanged.

Arrived home a few minutes early so ran into the park to finish slowly on the grass.

Interestingly, my overall pace for 3.1k all running was a bit slower than my overall jeffing pace for 10k so I think I'll mix it up a bit now I'm running more regularly.

It’s a nice run to do! I’m sure I’ve done it more than once but enjoyed it both times-it’s always good to spend time with Coach B!

Mixing things up is always a great way to run-it certainly keeps it interesting!

Coach B passes the time better than just music I find, I will do that run again, I found myself plodding again after a while and picked up the pace a little .

MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply toSueAppleRun

Definitely-Coach B with something from bbc sounds underneath is my favourite combination. I’ve most likely got a bit of rest for a few days now but I might dig out one of the head starts or finish lines when I’m out again. To be honest, anything he’s on is usually worth a listen!

Well done! Sounds like a good run 😃 interesting about the pace. I've heard of other people who have improved their race times and even achieved PBs while Jeffing. It clearly works! 😊 well done on remembering your suntan lotion, I forgot on the last bank holiday Monday and I got sunburn on my face and neck 😩

My face is beyond repair but it's tanned enough, I forgot on Sundays run and came back nicely tanned

That’s a really great idea about mixing it all up, I’m going to give it a try too!

we’ll done, Sola! Mixing it up is great. I think I’ve got one of my fastest times for 5K when I jeffed it. However, I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as running straight.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toJools2020

I enjoy running more than jeffing and it may have been slower because it was paths, driveways, curbs crossing roads etc. It felt good though. I'm walking Friday so might start my half marathon training tomorrow with the 15 minute run 😁

Good for you Sola! Being awake for ages in the middle of the night is a real pain but you didn’t let it stop you - and you remembered the sun cream!

I seem to have a couple of good nights then a couple of wakeful ones at the moment, probably adjusting to not working, and too much food. Hopefully it'll sort itself out soon, I'm reading a lot of rubbish books to pass the time 🤣 but I'm enjoying running

I do a lot of “light reading”…chick lit, rom coms and the like…means I don’t need to engage my brain too much! I download all the freebies on Apple Books, and have a little read in bed before sleeping. 😊👩🏻‍💻🛌

They don't stretch the mind and help us relax don't they? I like a good murder mystery too, I too read before I sleep, last night I slept well so maybe my wakeful hours have gone for now

LottieMW profile image
LottieMWAmbassador in reply toSueAppleRun

Here’s hoping your sleep has improved!

I’m a compulsive reader…I can’t put mysteries/thrillers down and even with lighter reading, I’ll often read a book in a day 🙄

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toLottieMW

Me too, I'm getting through loads since I retired but I'd rather read than watch TV

LottieMW profile image
LottieMWAmbassador in reply toSueAppleRun

We watch football and cycling on tv…I usually multitask and catch up on social media or my family history at the same time. We’ll also watch various British detective or US CSI type series…I have to concentrate on them!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toLottieMW

I watch while I knit but it was Willow who watched a lot of TV, he'd watch almost anything and lots of films, I'd filter most of it out

So great that you're getting out so regularly! Isn't it a lovely day, I'm glad I got out early on what was a cloudless morning.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toRoxdog

It's a bit cloudy now but still nice and warm, I made myself get out when I didn't want to because I felt I had to do some of what we'd planned, now my legs start begging to run if I don't get out most days either for a walk or a run, I'm feeling it's time to start my half marathon plan but then i'm always starting plans, I tend to fizzle out after a few weeks,

Roxdog profile image
RoxdogGraduate10 in reply toSueAppleRun

I know what you mean about plans! I avoid them, but then realise they're actually a good idea, as long as we don't beat ourselves up if we slip up and don't stick to them.I think a half marathon is completely achievable for you and just think how proud you would be. But maybe all in good time... For now, it seems you are doing yourself so much good by just running. Isn't running just a wonderful thing.

I've been feeling pretty dreadful for a while and the winter seemed endless, but just a few runs has changed everything.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toRoxdog

The biggest thing for me is not working, no alarm going off in the morning is wonderful. I don't want to just sit though and do nothing, I talked and talked about running more during my planning to retire, now I'm here, it's different to expected but is actually ok as long as I run or walk daily. This HM plan could take forever though because I'm back to C25k with my neighbour on Monday and my granddaughter is coming home soon and has asked if we can run together so I'll have to fit it in between

Roxdog profile image
RoxdogGraduate10 in reply toSueAppleRun

It's lovely to have people to run with and running so regularly will set you up nicely for the HM training!

Sounds like a decent run Sola particularly after a rotten nights sleep. That's usually a good excuse not to run so well done! I've never tried jeffing but I can understand why it might work. Happy gardening 😀

I have also found mixing it up results in a slightly faster pace which I don’t really understand but it is what it is so I enjoy doing that now xxxx

Yes, some intervals some jeffing and some longer runs definitely speeds us up a bit xxx

I wish we had your temperatures not as hot here no shorts yet and sun I would t think would tan , cool north westerly wind here.

LottieMW profile image
LottieMWAmbassador in reply toSueAppleRun

I’ve done that so far with the 15 minute runs 😊

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toLottieMW

I stuck to the minutes today but that's because Iran yesterday and will be walking twice tomorrow but when I did it before I did 15 minutes of one week then turned and did 15 minutes to start th next week on the way back, after work too I was shattered, a 15 minute run for me is out the door and round the block so it's nice once a week to do just that

apatsyf profile image

Sounds lovely Sola. Glad you have a plan and you are feeling strong. It's perfect weather at the moment, sunny but nice cooling breeze. Definitely shorts from now on. The neighbours will have to put on their sunglasses to cope with the white glare from my legs!! 😎All this talk of Jeffing and Coaches makes me think I must try them (am jyst doing Magic Plan to get back to 10k, but variety sounds good 👍).

Can I ask- do you have earphones, an earpiece or what... I don't have anything like that. Did try the little ear plugs on wires that came with the phone, but they just fell out.... 😳

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toapatsyf

Thank you, I've found that I love to start a plan but then fizzle out but what I'm good at is doing as I'm told, so the Nike Run Club guided runs are great, when coach says run easy I run easy when coach says run faster I run faster.I have Bluetooth ear buds, that way my phone sits in my pocket and I can forget about it. I bought cheap ones from Amazon, and are about £21 so don't break the bank, I used to get in a muddle with the wires on the ones that came with phones.

apatsyf profile image
apatsyfGraduate10 in reply toSueAppleRun

Ahha, thanks. Sounds worth a try!

Hedgehogs123 profile image
Hedgehogs123Graduate10 in reply toapatsyf

Ive got quite a few blue tooth ear phones and some of the bone conduction ones none of which were expensive, wires just annoy me and get in the way. Worth having a search on Amazon and reading the reviews.
